Front license plates .... why ?

If you think front plates ruin the look of your car, consider this...

With all the states that are going broke, couldn't they save million$ a year by getting rid of the front license plate requirement? They could have more money to burn on social programs for drug addicts and lazy people. Your Camaros would look better too

Great idea? Write your congresssman.

I'm a young guy, so maybe I don't get it. But how would that save money? On the surface, it would seem they earn money by police enforcing that law. No?

And I am in the minority, but I don't see what the big deal is. I live in California, and I have a front plate. I don't think it looks that bad.

We dont 'pay' for the plate itself really, we register the car and are given plates. If we had 1 less plate, that is 1 less that needs to be produced and the cost can be used for roads etc instead. (assuming the registration fees dont change)

As far as I can tell (i'm in NJ, soon to move to PA and having to find a way to remove that annoying front plate, which the dealership put on after I asked them not to), the only sensible value of those things is for the traffic cameras to catch them. Nothing against police, but I doubt a police officer has the control to be driving down the road in front of you, notice that you're doing something naughty, AND also reading your plate number backwards in his rear-view mirror.

California is bankrupt. There are 14 million registered cars in CA. If each of those front plates costs, say $10 (pay the criminal to bang 'em out, the transport, the clerical labor, etc), the savings would be $140,000,000 (spread over a few years because the plate are good for a while). If the price was $5, the savings would be $70,000,000, etc. You can get a lot of drug users fresh needles for that coin.

My point is FL is not bankrupt and neither is TX. We don't have front plates, so are they really needed in NJ and CA ? The cops will have to walk around the back of a parked car to see the plate..big deal, I say.

Here in Ontario (front plate required) the police aim their radar units at the front plate as it gives back a strong reflective signal.

I once got a ticket from a cop (who was running a radar trap) for having the plate screwed to the front air dam on my 4th Gen! I wasn't speeding and he told me that gave me the ticket because he couldn't see my front plate when he tried to aim the gun at it!

Best regardSS,

Elie

My understanding (from insurance agent) is that NJ will be doing away with the front plate requirement in 2011 to save the state money. Because of the high population density in NJ, the state looks to save tens of millions of dollars stamping only one plate instead of two.

Now in New Brunswick Canada it snows 6 months a year (plus or minus), so now if you only put your car in the road between April 1 and Oct 31 you don't need a front plate, but everyone else does!!

Folks, your trying to apply some logic to why we have some of the laws we have and it isn't going to work.

Remember, this is your government at work!

I think their motto is something like

".....no one of us is as dumb as all of us together..."
