not a real mechanic - but I've run my own brake lines, rebuilt bearings, replaced rotors and calipers and bleed my brakes, installed dizzy's and done my own timing.

Rebuilt and customized carburetors, and fixed electrical problems. installed radiators, water pumps, fuel pumps and etc.

did all the bushings on my wifes volvo - plus sway bars, panhard rods and such.

Basically I can do the basics.

I have deleted my cats by myself, changed my PCM on my current 2016 Camaro. I have done head changes before, headers, and did a cam on a 350 Chevy but needed a friend to make sure it was zeroed in dead centered. I am trying to see what mods are next for me. Would love to get a portable lift of some sort. Jack stands are boring. My first car was a 70,5 Camaro In 1977, took it all apart.

Back in the day when I had more time and little money, I did my own stuff. Now unless it's really simple and not very time consuming, I'll just pay to get it done.

Portable lift. soooo tempting.

I had a third gen camaro and a 4th. So all kinds of stuff outside of internal engine/trans work and welding.

It's difficult when you dont have your own home and have to rent an apartment. Gotta get lucky and land one with a private garage (like i currently do) or you're SoL.

I have yanked and rebuilt many Z28s along with Boss 302 and 427 Fords. Recently did my 97 Z28 Camaro front end since I wanted it done right. Moving toward choosing which scope to use for electronic diagnosis. Probably would use Oscium with my iPad after years of laptop software. Recently did another Ford Toploader. Nothing scares me anymore.

+1 I installed a catch can and CAI. Minor exterior mods. Will do basic electrical and stereo installs/repairs. Anything beyond that, call an expert.

Back in the day, we actually put a piece of plywood up against my 69 Z28 to cut down on the wind while we changed the clutch. In a back alley, car up on jack stands, in January.

Same here. Back in my VTEC days, I did all the mods and maintenance in my Integra GSR. Now that I am older (42) and make more money but with less time (now with family), I just pay to get the work done.

Have not ventured too far into the engine aspect but I can change my own breaks, oil, shocks/struts, control arms etc. if only I had a scrap engine to work with(and a place the wife won't yell at me for taking it apart lmao).

Very little I *haven't* done, but as a couple of the other posters alluded, the economics come into it at some point. Doing hard-core mods makes a lot more sense on an older car, off warranty. Hard to justify on my 10 month old SS... for the amount "invested", might as well trade for a 1LE or a ZL1, instead. That said, I get the itch pretty bad reading the tech threads, sometimes.

I restore cars in my shop part-time. Did all my mods on my lift. Fix neighbors cars. Love it.

I've never been a sit in the house while the men work on cars type of girl. I can, and have, done motor swaps, tranny swaps, exhausts, rebuilds, etc.. Did an engine swap on an 06 Jeep a couple weeks ago, wasn't the exact same, but I made it work. We own a body shop, but we do all mechanical work also. Taught my 16 yr old son how to change pads and rotors last week on his car.

My boys tell me all the time about the reactions they get when they say "Let me ask my mom", when someone has car trouble. My husband can do it all better and faster, but he's usually dealing with customers these days(I'm not good with customers, I tend to say shit like "Wtf do you mean you didn't NOTICE your headlight fell out, are you retarded?), so they come to me.
