3.91 gears and F.I.?
Hello, i have a 2014 1ss rs l99 and i plan on adding 3.91 gears on it. My friend has the same car i do and just added them and i love the feel for it. I see post of people saying not to go with3.91 down the line if you are going F.I. down the line and i wanted to know why that was. For right now i just have a cold air intake, bo's ported throttle body and a cat back exhaust. Any input? Down the line im planing on going with cam and ported i.m. and ported heads. Long tubes and hfc. Then start saving up for a pro charger. Thanks in advance.

Go ahead and do it. Later on down the line do a partial trade of the full diff assembly with a M6 owner when you get the blower. However I would get LT headers and a tune before the gears unless it's a warranty thing.

I'm with 62nalide on this -- I looked into it -- I have 3.91s and if I went FI -- all I'd do is spin the tires -- hooking up would be a problem. Would have to go 3.23 or 3.45s if I went FI.
I decided to stay NA. 3.91s are great. FI will make it a torque machine -- thus the 3.91s will just spin away... -Don |

I went with 3.45 on my auto. I go FI on Monday.

The gears feel great because they spin his engine up quicker (simple way to say it).

Also depends on what type of FI, if your going Centri where the TRQ and HP is higher in the RPM range then 3.91s would be a good choice to get this heavy beast moving off the line...if your going PD blower then maybe the down low TRQ and gears would spin like a moooofoo but fun at the same time lol

Do have a L99?
Also to the OP I have 3.91, headers, and all the other supporting mods in my sig. And I still have some trouble hooking up in my car. I would look into getting the 3.73 gears if you are to go with FI

I have 390 gears and a whipple and love it. Sure it spins the tires easier but it gets these fat pigs moving a lot faster when not going full throttle also. I don't see the big deal with running them with FI especially if you get a good tire on it. I'm also a manual...

Take it from someone who does this stuff on the regular, I would not do 3.91's in an A6 car with forced induction. You can make all the power you want with a blower but if you can't put it to the ground & all you do is blow the tires off, it does you no good. "Spinnin ain't winnin"...
Depending on your desired power level I would run a 3.27 or 3.45 ratio. For anything 650rwhp and below, the 3.45 is a good option. 650-800rwhp needs the 3.27 to stay under control. IMO... |
