Sport mode will also hold the gear a little longer before it shifts for more spirited driving. Use sport mode if you plan to race anyone. And of course only race on the track.

This would put you into "Manual" mode. Sport Mode is fully automatic with higher and more aggressive shift points than straight Drive mode.
Jump in your car and take it for an aggressive spin in Drive, then do the same in Sport mode. If you can't tell the difference... I can't help you.

Is this, in theory, a separate set of tables that can be manipulated by those in-the-know as to tranny programming?
Something akin to the Tow/Haul mode used on my 2500HD?

The characteristics that make sports mode different are that the car will hold on to the current gear longer before shifting, and when you really want to play hard and you get on it for a certain period of time, the car will 'sense' that you want to play, so it will actually keep the rpms high (say 4,000+ rpm) so that you have the best part of the power available to you instantly. After about 30 - 60 seconds or so if you aren't still getting on it, the rpms will drop back down to normal

Can definitely feel the difference. Definitely holds the gear longer and seems like the shifts are quicker or more precise (the latter may just be in my mind though )

The actual difference is that Sport mode will hold a gear longer, if you are at WOT or close to it then it will hold it almost to red line. Drive will shift earlier to save gas.
Thats it. Yes, a tuner can change the settings for drive vs sport. |

Sport mode is an adaptive mode. It will adjust itself based on your current driving style. If you drive it easy, it will shift normally. If you start hammering on it, it will shift harder an hold gears longer due to the programing parameters.

Go to the drag strip, put it in Sport Mode and floor it. Your car will shift gears at 5500 rpm and you will get the quickest time out of it.
For road course aggressive style racing, as said above, the car will keep it in gear longer assuming you will want to go faster. If you don't understand what is going on with the car, it can appear as though your tranny is stuck in gear. It's not, that is how it is designed for aggressive road course racing.
