LT1 Underrated?

Is the general consensus that the LT1 is underrated? The stingray with performance exhaust seems to be dynoing at about 405-410 whp. Assuming a 15% drivetrain loss, should mean the LT1 makes about 480 at the crank.

You can guess all you want.

or just read the facts

http://www.sae.org/certifiedpower/details.htm

No motor since the mid 2000's that is sae certified is underrated. They all make within 1% of advertised rating.

The end.

Drivetrains are getting more efficient. If you assume a loss of 12%, the math works out just fine. No one is underrating engines.

Hellcat is underrated as well not 100% sure if it's SAE certified but I'm pretty sure it is. Correction it is SAE certified.

Maybe what you are seeing is optimistic chassis dynos and more efficient drivetrains instead of underrated SAE numbers.

Why do people think that drivetrain loss is a static number?

It boggles my mind. You guys are way over simplifying it.

I agree. I met a guy last week who just picked up his new Challenger M6 and after 38 miles, had it dynoed in the hot humid weather in Florida and got 640 RWHP. Even at 12% loss, that 727 to crank.

Wow not even broke in. Either they are overrated or they have the most efficient powertrain ever, I highly doubt that though.

Dyno numbers vary greatly, are insanely easy to manipulate and are not directly comparable.

That being said it appears that the new 8 speed automatic in both the General Motors and Mopar cars are very efficient and have a fairly low loss amount.

No underrating with SAE. Just a chassis dyno being inaccurate as usual. Could have probably put a C7 on it that day and came up with a similar underrate.

Exactly. 12% is probably on the high side for these new autos. BMW is one of the few manufactures not SAE rating their engines. My N20 (2.0T) in mine is supposed to make 240BHP. That's what it usually puts down on the dyno at the rear wheels. Which is why the ATS 2.0T performs so close to it but is SAE rated at 275BHP.

Again.... You can't just apply a percentage to a crank number to get whp. It's not a static percentage of drivetrain loss.
