Hill assist on an automatic?!

I was sitting at a light today (on a hill I suppose) and my car started to tremble, vibrate even, I thought i was going crazy for a second. Then the light changed and i pressed the gas and the info on the dash said “hill assist.” Why would an automatic need Hill assist and why would it shake the whole damn car so badly?

Automatics still roll back on very steep hills, actually, so hill assist is nice to have even on an automatic. I couldn't tell you what caused the vibration, however.

Agree with SSDanny, I have an A8 as well, and on hills I did notice the hill start assist, but it's never shaken the car.

Hill assist kicks in for my A8 SS too, but it never shakes. It’s a good thing to have if it’s not shaking.

The shaking is definitely not normal. All it's doing is braking for you until gas is applied to get you going.

Yep, GM has used hill assist on the auto's now since at the least the 2016 models. My 2016 Sierra has it, comes in handy and is pretty valuable if you have weight behind the vehicle that could cause the vehicle to roll backwards.

All it does it locks the brakes, also it wont hold forever, eventually it will release and you can roll backwards.

I wish there was an option to disable it. My driveway is inclined, and it always kicks in while I am trying to park. First I thought it was a clunky tranny.. nope.. just brakes.

Surprised me the first time I saw it on my dash, but it never caused a vibration or shaking of any kind.

I back into my garage which is also on an incline. However, after having a BMW where the hill assist activated on even the slightest of grades, getting used to the Chevy wasn’t too bad as the clutch is vastly easier to modulate.

I am betting you only applied light throttle (light throttle won't be enough to overcome Hill Assist) ...under light throttle you probably only triggered 4 cylinders instead of 6...thus the Vibration...I could be wrong..but Im speculating.

Yes. Thats exactly what it does. Lets say someone pulls up too close to you on an incline, even the time it takes for you to move your foot from the brake to the pedal will be enough to roll back slightly and bump them - a vehicle weighs between 3,200 and 3,800 lbs thus .. gravity has ALOT more effect on something with that much weight. I do understand that sounds extreme but after getting used to it, I have no real issues with it.

You have to go into settings to turn off the vibrator option.

-- make sure that that Skyhook is disabled in the Emergency Towing options... you don't want one of those coming upon you the second you slip on the clutch and stall or something..
