RS to SS??

Hey guys glad to be a part of this community now! Long story short, I started financing a 2017 V6 RS camaro only about 2 months ago, and I feel like I'm going to want the SS already :( I do like the car and the power is plenty, but I'm not 100% happy with it. I feel like I shouldnt put a lot of money into it because I'll eventually trade up. I saved a lot of money to put down to make my payments affordable, but now there are some used 2016 SS's that are slightly more expensive than what I paid for my RS. Does anyone have any experience going from a V6 to an SS? How differrent are the costs of ownership (Gas, insurance, payments)? I understand I'll be losing some money IF i trade up to an SS, but I'm not too worried about that right now. I put down $16,100 to be sure I could always afford my payments (I'm a college student). Thanks a lot guys I look forward to hearing what you all think!

If you can make the trade happen go for it. But if you're gonna get screwed, I say enjoy the RS for a couple years, then pick up a used 2ss or ZL1. Gas costs would be close if using premium on the v6, Insurance depends on age, but Im paying 330 quarterly with farmers @ 24, with my old 72 firebird on the policy. Im getting a few discounts though, good driver/high GPA student. Payments @ 634 monthly on the car, put about $160-$200 through the tank monthly.

The RS is a fantastic car, don't lose your butt on a trade, not worth it IMO.
But... If you can get a deal... One that doesn't kill you... And your insurance doesn't go ape... DO IT!

Well, from a financial standpoint you're going to lose close to $10k no matter how you dice it. I don't know your financial situation but if you can swallow that amount of money and still live comfortably then who is anyone to tell you no?

But if you can't eat that amount of money you probably shouldn't do it.

Honestly .. it's how deep your pockets are ..

Insurance: it will probably go up a lot. I only say this becuase you said you are a college student. I'm assuming you are early 20s. I would call the insurance agent and get a quote to compare the difference.

Fuel: Depending on how you drive and amount of traffic in your commute. I average 21.7mpg of driving 85% highway with no traffic. Local / traffic I average about 15mpg or so ( +/-)

Maintenance : nothing major I have done . Oil changes @ the dealer is $90 .. if I do it myself it would cost me $90 .. so let the dealer do it . Tires can be costly. Brakes are probably same. Tires is another thing to consider. 275/35/20 aren't the cheapest tires.

Payments : a lot of factors here .. depends on how much you get the car for plus credit score etc ..

You honestly have to see the average monthly increase total .. compare and see if it's worth it .. if I was you I would suck it up and hold onto the RS . Yes it sucks .. but you will take a big hit on trade in .. ( unless they can give you amazing price and steal on the SS )

Good luck with everything !

Cheers

don't start calculation down to the cent. Either you have the money or not. What happen if you get a flat tire or you have to go to your dealer because of some.....I don't know what and spend a few hundred $.

If you have to nickel & dime all your expenses, then you probably can't afford it. Like everyone said, you'll get hosed on the trade in. Instead, enjoy what you have.

Tires are $400 a piece and the SS goes through front and rears pretty fast. Cost of ownership will be higher on most things. Oil changes will be nearly doubled.

$90 oil change is high. It's only $44 for 10qts of Mobil One full and like $7 for AC Delco filter

Doesn't the RS package give you the same wheels and tires as the SS?

I'd keep what I have also. Wait until after you graduate, get the career on track, decide on long term financial goals (house and for sure 401K contributions as much as you can stomach. Max your 401 each & every year. Trust me, the earlier you start & put in as much as you can, the better it will be BY A LOT later).

Impressive a college student could put a $16K down though, kudos.

Well in all fairness the ZL1 makes the SS look downright economical. You had to pay gas guzzler tax and we avoided it, and you're STILL stuck with 1-4 shift CAGS if you haven't overriden it lol!
