Omg oil leak

Recently changed my oil and filter and now i have a leak. Looks like its coming from the oil filter housing. I have a 6 inch puddle after sitting for 5 hours. Pudlle is on the drivers side near the front and i have oil all over the filter housing

*note i did not replace the oil filter gasket.

Guess im going to go buy a new filter so i can replace that gasket

Ok after futher examination before i went to the store i think i am leaking oil from below the oil filter cap. Somewhere on the housing. Maybe somewhere underneath. Im not sure if i have a warrenty or anything. I doubt it. I bought the car off craigslist with cash. Not sure what to do now. Can i add oil and keep driving. Its my only car i just spent all of my money on because i was sure i wasnt going to have a ******* oil leak

Replaced or not I'm betting the gasket got "displaced".

If it's not in the correct ridge, you'll get a significant leak. Double check the placement (and don't ask me how I know!).

And don't use RTV!

If the filter is at least hand tight and the gasket seated properly there'll be no leaks.

I'm betting the old gasket from the previous filter is still on the mount and the new filter and gasket got screwed on top of it.

Put the RTV down.

Mine did the same thing, the Bosch filter gasket doesn't fit correctly in the housing and the filter came loose and started leaking. Make sure the gasket goes in the groove or you'll have that issue every time.

Yup the gasket needs to sit in properly. I always use Mobil 1 filter on mine (comes with a new gasket) and there was an incident when there was small leak that my buddy noticed as we finished the oil change and started the car up. Opened and realigned the thing and it was fine.

Op my car did this when I pulled it out of the garage after the winter. It was not leaking when I stored it...when I backed out there was a small oil patch on the concrete floor. I took in for an oil change. It was the filter...it was loose the gasket started seeping some how. That was in April , I haven't had a problem since.

If you need just a new gasket, in case you mucked up your old one, you can get one from GM, (ACDelco) under p/n 12577653. Just a few bucks most places. (list price at dealer is $6.10)

You need to get it located on the housing cap correctly as mentioned.

If you have damaged the cap, you can buy a replacement housing cap (comes with above O-ring) for around 25 bucks from Amazon. GM p/n 12583470 (list price at dealer is $57.80)

One more story- I had a filter come apart. The bottom just below the filter element tore off and stayed at the bottom of the chamber.

Somehow it caused no issues (it was tough to get the top back on!) but luckily I saw it next oil change. Now I check the old filter carefully every change.

I appreciate all the help.. My leak from the filter cap was huge.. Poured oil all over the drivers side of my engine and everywhere else. i put RTV (oil resistant) around the inside cap and i havent leaked a drop since. Right now im installing an oil catch can, and i'll be changing my oil again and going with a magnetic plug. Everythings good.
