Yea, that's why I gave the '16 SS the nod for interior quality. But at least to me the '16 style is a bit wierd and disjointed. The 5th gen had show car style.

This is going to turn into a Gen 5 vs Gen 6 debate instead of a ZL1 vs 16SS debate.

But aren't we talking about the 5th gen ZL1? Not everything was an improvement. Still it's an apples to oranges comparison. A more expensive limited production car against every day SSes. The SS has come a long way to be directly compared to the last gen ZL1. It is so good the '17 1LE and new ZL1 aren't calling to me at all.

I was divided between the 5th. gen ZL1 and the new '16 Camaro SS, but I fell in love with a fully loaded low miles red '14 ZL1 with Recaros included. I parked my car side to side with a new '16 Camaro SS. The 5th. Gen ZL1 has a more muscle car look from any angle, it has better exterior look and better looking Recaros than the new car, more interior space specially on the rear seat area, new model does not have usable rear seats. I don't have any doubt that the Technology of the new model is better, lighter, improved suspension and strong N.A. engine but I think it lost the muscle look, for me only the front and maybe the sides look great, but the back looks simple, the car has a Japanese sport car look, but still is an amazing machine. Either way that you chose would be a great choice. On my case I would not replace my 5th gen ZL1 for the new SS.
The new ZL1 looks amazing but it would be very $$$. Good luck in your choice and enjoy.

The smaller 6th gen- in particular the backseat and trunk is a byproduct of weight reduction, which is ok by me! Couple that with the non-detuned LT1 and OMG: Similar perf.#s in a car for 30 grand less (1ss). Also it's now a tossable bonafide sports car + all the tech (2ss) and naturally aspirated! I still feel the 6th gen ss has a muscle car look, just not on steroids like the zl1. I was actually hot for a used ZL1 until the 6th gen ss was born. The Z will always be a bad ass no matter what comes after it. |

The biggest advantage the ZL1 has going for it is the big power you can make for relatively cheap. If you plan on keeping the ZL1 stock, in my mind the 16 is the better platform.

Here I share some performance numbers that I got from my old MT magazines:
0-60 MPH 5th.gen ZL1 3.8 secs. 6th.gen SS 4.0 5th.gen 1LE 4.4 Winner: 5th. gen ZL1 1/4 Mile 5th.gen ZL1 12.1 sec @ 117.4 mph 6th.gen SS 12.4 sec @ 114.6 mph 5th.gen 1LE 12.9 sec @ 110.5 mph Winner: 5th. gen ZL1 Braking 60-0 5th.gen ZL1 108 ft. 6th.gen SS 104 ft. 5th.gen 1LE 99 ft. Winner: 5th. gen Camaro SS 1LE Lateral Acceleration: 5th.gen ZL1 1.02 g. 6th.gen SS 1.00 g. 5th.gen 1LE .98 g. Winner: 5th. gen Camaro ZL1 Figure Eight: 5th.gen ZL1 23.9 sec @ 0.83g 6th.gen SS 24.1 sec @ 0.85g 5th.gen 1LE 24.5 sec @ 0.87 Winner: 5th. gen Camaro ZL1 1st. Place: '12-'15 Camaro ZL1 2nd.Place: '16 Camaro SS 3rd. Place: '13-'15 Camaro SS 1LE The top performer was the 5th. gen ZL1 (that is a bargain now comparing a use one VS a new 6th. gen Camaro SS). But also shows how great is the stock '16 SS that beat fairly easy the prior 1LE SS with track dedicated suspension. Great job GM . If you have either of those Camaros, just enjoy it, you have a great car.

Nice comparison! I looked at used gen5 ZL1's, since most were not bought as daily drivers, most don't have more than 5-15k miles on them (that I found) and they are still asking $46-52k for them. Now I've seen a good few 5gen 1LE's with less than 30k on them going for $28-32k. My 6gen 1SS is scheduled to be built next week so obviously I don't have it yet, but I have driven a few (as well as the ZL1's) to me there were very comparable in overall acceleration. For me personally I never cared as much for the 5gen, especially the standard SS, the 1LE and the ZL1 don't look bad. As soon as I saw the 6gen, to me they had fixed the ugly front grill headlight area and the interior, which were my main complaints about the 5gen. I think the flat back end of the 5gen (14-15) looks better than the slightly rounded back end of the gen6, but to me they are still pretty similar. For me it came down to price and it being a new car. Paying under 40k for a new car that has very comparable performance numbers to the ZL1, was good to me. Like you said though, if you have either of these models, enjoy the heck out of them, they're all hot.

100% stock SS 6th gen cams are ripping 11.9s in the quarter with time slips to prove it. (Stock engine, stock tires - ALL stock). Winner: 2016 cam SS Not to mention some 3.8 sec 0-60 runs. BUT like u said, can't go wrong with either. |

Those are the hero runs. ZL1's have those as well, with similar times.
