Jack Stands for Exhaust Swap

Never really done any work on a car before, but I'll be looking to put a Borla ATAK cat-back on my SS when I get it. (In May when I return from deployment) I imagine it's much more satisfying to do it yourself as opposed to having a shop do it, so I'd much prefer to install it myself with the help of a friend. My question is: will two pair of these jack stands be sufficient for the job?

16" is close but, the higher you can get things the better. I'd go for the 3 ton stands. I think those can get you to 20" or even higher.

Agreed, putting a cat back on these cars is super easy! I have no idea why anybody would pay to have it done. Its silly easy

They'll be fine. It's super easy. The hardest part was getting the damn hangers off the old mufflers. Even that wasn't horrible.

Yea jackstands and a couple hours no problem! I love this Camaro, it's like the old school late 60's early '70's cars, easy to work on! I've done headers, exhaust, suspension, cosmetic and performance mods all myself and I'm amazed at how easy it is to work on this car! I'm no mechanic either so like me, just go for it! You'll save lots of labor money and feel really good about doing it yourself! Most of the products for these cars have really good install instructions and we have LOTS of support here on C5 for do-it-yourselfers!

Id go 3 ton as well. I never use my old 2 ton anymore and the larger footprint makes me more comfortable laying under a 4000 pound car!

I will be posting up picks of complete manifold back removal and LT header install later this week taller jack stands are better. I did mine on jack stands in garage was easy will also post video of complete start to stop showing location and access of inner and outer exhaust hangers. I used 4 ton and 6 ton because that is what I have in my garage.

Not sure what branch you are or if your active/reserve, but most active military posts/bases have an auto craft shop/skills center that has lift bays for rent on an hourly basis. I've used the ones at Fort Leonard Wood and Fort Riley. They charge 5 or 6 dollars an hour and have mechanics there to help you if need be. I did my ATAK install myself, but got the help of one of the guys to drop the stock exhaust down. The one at Riley even has a full tool room with every tool imaginable that you can sign out for free. WAY easier than crawling around on the ground!

Now that is cool.

Closest base to me is Ft. Ben Harrison but, it's quasi-closed. They still have reserve units there and I know they do have a motor pool. Oh well.

Is it difficult to pull the stock exhaust off and get it out from under the car? I know it's pretty heavy...I would imagine doing a cutback on jackstands would be pretty cramped no?

I'm active, and we do have an auto-hobby shop. Figured it would be easier to just get some stands and do it in my garage/driveway as from what I understand it's usually booked for a couple days. Being fairly impatient I'm not sure I could handle the wait. You are right though, I should definitely look into it at least. If I don't go that route I guess I'll get some 4 ton jack stands as taller seems to be the consensus.

Forgot to mention, thanks for the pics GreyLS3SS, those should come in handy. Does that foam come with most jack stands or did you just have it on hand? Or what looks like foam, can't really tell.
