Broken Ring Gear in Differential
Well after only 253,000 miles I had a rear-end failure...
Got a used differential from a 34,000 mile front-end total on the way. |

Did this happen during a hard launch?

That would be my guess. Shock load. Fatigue too. That’s a shit ton of miles.

No, a not hard launch (although I've done some). I was cruising at 60 MPH on a state highway. Started feeling a bump, bump, bump. Turned around and headed the 20 miles home. Time I got home it was BANG, BANG, BANG. Lucky I made it. My guess is that it cracked during a hard launch and just picked a random time to fail. Just glad it wasn't on one of my recent eight-hour trips to our cottage in Michigan.
Any way pretty much back together now with the used Differential. the threads on the Left half-shaft were all torn-up. Can't locate a new OEM part. Even looked into a 1LE shaft, but that's out-of-stock as well. So I'll have to go with an aftermarket axle. |

My Camaro is still not on the road. I bought an aftermarket axle assembly from RockAuto. The brand name is Trakmotive. After the test drive, the axle had walked about an inch out of the differential. There is a long slip shaft in it. I tried twice more to get the snap ring to engage by removing the axle nut and pounding on the end of the shaft. Axle just keeps walking out.
I then ordered a M24x1.5 Die. Last night I chased the threads on the old axle. It cleaned-up pretty well. With any luck I'll have it back on the road soon. |

I didn't understand a single thing you wrote in your last post other than "RockAuto", but I found it very interesting, nonetheless...

234,500 miles on mine, and it's an LLT engine. I guess I don't have the torque to do
that to mine. However. I am putting in a 48,000 mile cradle, with everything except the rear calipers. I saw one where the diff cover had a hole in it, due to the ring gear breaking. |
