removing rust stains from painted wheels

Does anyone know the best way to remove rust stains from painted rims? I have some rust stains from the rotors and want to know of a way that wont ruin the paint. Thanks in advance.

Wash with soap and water using a boars hair or whoolie (soft) brush, inspect. If it's surface rust you could do additional damage to the painted surface if you go right to clay.

I would wash with a brush and clay bar, clay bar works some serious miracles with getting stuff off sometimes.

Another recommendation I have seen online is a ball of tinfoil with an all purpose cleaner, I would do a clay bar before resorting to that though to avoid risk of scratching up the wheel.

Hey NYRfan!
Good points. I guess I did not mentioned washing 1st as I just assumed that was a given to most people.

When you say painted, I'm assuming you have factory clear coated wheels?

Distilled white vinegar dissolves rust and is safe on your clear coat. It's only mildly acidic. I'd wear gloves unless you like the smell of vinegar on your hands.

You want to saturate the area as much as possible with it. I use cotton balls soaked in it and just hold it on the surface for about a minute. Using a separate towel gently wipe residue away. Depending on how long it's been on the surface it may take a second application.

Once it's removed, clay the entire face of the wheel, then apply a good paint sealant. If you don't have sealant but have wax, use the wax, the wax will have less durability so will need to be applied more often.
