Hand turning crank I hear pop
I am in the middle of installing tsp vvt 2.2 cam and am putting the crank pulley. When rotating slowly I dont have a lot of resistance and do not hear anything. When I turn with a ratchet at a faster pace I hear a pop (like when the spring is off and you pull the valve up quick).
I had crank and cam set at 12 when i put timing chain on, i took the rockers back off to see if keepers were loose. Everything seems right. Obviously dont want to start and blow stuff apart. Any ideas? |

Hope I can find some advice. I have a completed cam install ready to run, but dont want to start it up. Considering taking the head off and inspecting valves. They were fine when I put the springs on though.

I remeber hearing a bit of a pop when turning it over by hand. I think it was the valves snapping shut on the seats.

My cam chain would sling back against the ls2 dogbone tensioner. I was obvious what it was with timing cover off....echoed thru heads when cover was on. Didnt happen until rockers were on and pressure on lifters.... was kind of like said, valves quickly shutting with spring pressure creating a whiplash like effect of the chain on the dogbone tensioner.
Just an idea, if the timing cover is off and noise is still in the motor or behind then I dunno. I had to pull timing cover and I could visually see it happen. Good Luck!

crank it over with the starter. IF everything sounds normal, and it should, your good to go. I had a header crossover tube leaking once on a new build first start.. sounded like a rod knock. Oh how things that aren't anything can sound like things that are huge.

It could be absolutely nothing and I'm just scared to start. I put plugs in and tried to hand crank. Much harder obviously with none of that noise. Just really worried about hitting that key and a hole in the piston being the outcome. Wishing I would have been happy with just bolts on at this point.

I have it all back together and really dont want to pull that pulley again. Watching rockers with cover off it seems to come when springs are at total lift. Spoke with dyno steve and texas speed and provided video with both baffled. Thinking about putting camera in each cylinder and if no visual signs of clearance issues just hitting that key. I only decided to go the cam after a weeks worth of good over time. Hopefully wont takes weeks more I'd it goes bad.

Looks like your not going to be satisfied as to what it is until you take the timing cover off and have a look. So take the timing cover off and the valve covers off and turn it over by hand a see where the pop sound is coming from . You have gone this far , so just bite the bullet and check it out.

I have the same thing going on after having my car sit for a year, finally got it back together, ready to fire, turned it over by hand and hear a clunk every 180* turn, it’s in the same spot every rotation. I don’t remember hearing it the first cam swap. I may just be paranoid from all I’ve been thru with this car. Plugs were out and mines an auto as well.

Update. I about crapped my pants turning the key, but I started the beast. I am facing getting the tune right at the moment but nothing came flying out. I'm pretty sure the noise was just the valves closing, but it was weird that not many people were mentioning experiencing the same thing.
