Painted exhaust tips: updated with before and after
These things were always dirty no matter how much I cleaned them. So I painted the inside area flat black with hi-temp paint. We'll see how this holds up.
Update: See post #14 for before and after photos

Looks great, are these (tips) easy to remove? Was thinking of painting the exteriors black as well, but heat may be an issue. . .

Engine paint should do it. They handle 550 degrees. No way the tips hit that mark. Although I'm not sure if painting on chrome changes how well it sticks.

They are welded so it would take some work to take them off and on. I used high temp paint so I am not worried about heat. I only cleaned the tips before painting and did not prep the surface by sanding or otherwise. I chose to do that in case I don't like this later or it gives me problems I can use paint thinner and remove the flat black paint and go back to the original chrome.

You won't have any problems, I painted the interior of tips with high temp flat black several times without any prep. Nothing happens because the surface is rather rough to begin with , as long as you're cleaned it up well to begin with. If anybody else is going to do this, use acetone liberally to clean the interior. |

Did you guys use spray paint or a brush?
I like the idea of hiding the exhaust oily dirt.

so did you just tape it off and spray right on the car? I looked at the tack-welds holding the exhaust tips on, not really something I'm capable of messing with, but might try to tape off the whole area and paint it flat black, inside and out. . .

Here's how I have done it, with paper and painters tape ,tape off the valance /rear skirt. Then tape the outside of the exhaust pipe tip, taking care to make sure the edge is uniform around the rim. Take the tape a bit inside the rim.Using a spray paint can Use light and quick spritzes until the whole thing is covered on the inside, don't worry about getting it real even, because it levels well when it's high temp flat black. Wait 20 minutes and do another coat .Remember no one is going to get down on their knees to inspect your work. Except you…
Take note what I said above about an acetone scrub clean up before painting. |

I'll try to take one tomorrow in better light.

I'll add that to cover the exhaust tips on the outside I cut the toes off an old pair of crew socks and slid the sock tubes over the pipes. Much easier for me than a bunch of paper and tape around the pipes except to make the clean edge with tape as Glen states.

Just to clarify, the tips are actually stainless steel. If they were chrome, nothing would stick to them very well. Your little strips above the front LED's on a SS are chrome (plated plastic).
BTW, the tips look great!

Here is before and after. It creates the illusion that the inside diameter is bigger as a bonus to avoiding the dirty tip look all the tip.
