Dual action orbitals?

Bought myself a new RUPES orbital polisher this past week. Bought the Big Foot 15mm, the new MK II model with a mess of different pads and the entire RUPES polishing system, polishes.

My car came with some Dealership, wash mitt scratches in the clear coat so looking forward to buffing them out, if it ever warms up here.

Couldn't wait to try it, so yesterday I washed the hood of my DD Honda Pilot, clay barred the hood, then tried a few of the different buffing pads and compounds. Followed up with a quick KLASSE polish on a fine pad.

The results pretty much amazed me. REALLY looking forward to removing my minor CC scratches and swirl marks on the Camaro and giving it a thorough paint correction.

Anyone else using an orbital? What's the consensus of opinion on the thickness /quality of our paint? I've heard it's pretty thin.

That is a fantastic polisher! You will definitely love it. On mine the thickness appears to be pretty standard (between 4-4.5mils). Unless you are out there polishing over and over and over, don't worry about going through the clear coat with the Rupes. If you are really concerned, you can always pick up a paint thickness gauge and measure yourself.

Key thing is when you are doing paint correction, always start with the LEAST aggressive approach and gradually step up until you get the results you want. Then a nice layer of protection and you are good to go!

Have fun!

timmy,

Appreciate the input. My package came with the Mike Phillips "How to Use Your new RUPES". A ton of good information.

Nice purchase- the wife just got me a porter cable DA for Christmas. There are definitely better toys out there, but I'll only be using it once per year in the spring to clear up any scratches from winter salt.

Rupes-Flex-Griots---all killer machines.

The secret to a show car detail is using the orbital to polish, before the wax, sealant or coating.....

I bought a Shurhold, which is basically the same as the Griots real cheap, used it a few times and love it. Use the Lake Country pads with it, awesome results.

These past few months the weather and roads have been so bad I have very little driving time with the SS. "Idle hands do the Devils work" as they say. I have bought a TON of detailing supplies.

I can see myself detailing my tractor any day now...So I can USE some of the stuff. Especially the buffer. I really enjoy using it.

I'm about to pull the trigger on this one, it has a 20% coupon available to me as well and ends up being 138$, anyone have any reason not to buy?

I am not a detailing addict, so I only need it to polish out the dealer scratches and apply a wax/sealer and that ll do me. I will then do the same to the womans ride, and it will go on the shelf.

That's a great deal on that setup! Can't do much better for that price! Everything you need to get started.

I got the Griots Garage DA polisher for Christmas. I order two pad and pad cleaning kits from Chemical Guys. I practiced on my red 2004 Colorado Z71 w/140k miles over the holidays - Clay bar, paint chip repair, paint correction, polish, CQartz - Wow, it looks like a brand new truck! Can't wait to get my black Camaro out of winter storage to take care of swirls, minor scratches, and a few chips. It should be really easy compared to my truck.
