Exclamation Took the bird out for a spin, factory Serp-Belt chirping..

Yep, that's right. I'm still running the factory serpentine belt @ 44,441 miles. Chirping is more prominent toward the lower half of the belt path (around the crank pulley). Also noticed a slight loping idle speed when at a light after the car has warmed up. Not that common, but it'll drop to around 550 or raise to 1000 RPM for at most a second. Blipping the throttle sometimes brings it back to a steady 750 idle. Seeing as the last ~15K were put on rather quickly as opposed to the rest of the car, I'm fearing one of two things:

1) The factory belt is finally glazed and giving out

or

2) My pullies are going out of adjustment (namely idler pulley).

Also taking this to LS1tech but if any of you guys have comments or suggestions I'd like to hear 'em. Especially since this is my 3rd car and I've never had one that had an idler pulley/tensioner or an actual belt go back. Well outside of a catastrophic pulley/belt failure but that's another story altogether..

Replace the belt because it's cheap to do. It might fix the problem. Next would be the tensioner. Still relatively cheap.

However, a chirp as opposed to a squeal is probably an alignment problem. Two ways to check and confirm it:

1. Get a spray bottle and wet the belt with water while the engine is running. If the chirp goes away, it's an alignment problem.

2. Put the belt on upside down. If the chirp goes away, it's an alignment problem. The minimal difference in the grooves when the belt is reversed corrects for the misalignment.

Just..

Yeah, looked up the whole 'shitty factory grease' thing, too. Looks to be simple. Belt isn't wildly/obviously misaligned but the AC belt is almost cracked through. I wanna beat the previous owner with a lead pipe.. holy f'k.. (then again I'm just as guilty so I'll hit myself afterwards..)

Be happy it was a quick fix and you didn't have to replace your a/c. I once spilled coolant on the a/c pulley and that chirp does NOT go away. I guess the coolant gets in the clutch bearings or something and just doesn't play nice.

Oh she was cracked pretty good, that belt. Gonna replace both eventually, but probably just the serp and have the tensioners checked out. All I really need is heat and I have it still so I'm not at all at odds with just leaving the belt off for the sake of less things to replace down the line.
