I think the dealer damaged my car

I took the Z in for an oil change, nothing special, was in and out. Today when I open the passenger door I hear and feel the door scraping against the opposite side front fender. (Picture the passenger side door looking to the right of the door when it opens a separation of the door to the front fender occurs) There absolutely no damage to the door so I'm confused as hell as to why the door misaligned itself after 7000 miles. I've only had 3 passengers in the car and this was during break-in, so I've counted that out. It suddenly occurred that perhaps it was thrown on the lift incorrectly causing the misalignment within the door and the front fender. Do you think this is possible? Its the only thing I can think of...

I'm actually dropping the car off tomorrow for 4 TSBs (HVAC, Tranny overfill, replacement of springs, and tie rod tightened) and i hate going through the process of telling a dealer they damaged my car......

Check the fender behind the wheel on the bottom. If the lift is not aligned correctly damage to panel can result.

Improper lift points caused damage, most likely.

Happened to others on this forum.

Dealers only pay for 24 minutes labor total, for oil changes - they rack-em fast.

Ask to meet the service manager before dropping the car off for service again.

Fill him in.

I've decided they can keep their "free" oil changes.

Use a reputable quick service like Valvoline Instant Oil Change with a pit - no lifting or damage required. Check local reviews online.

That's the reason I just did my 500 mile oil change myself on my own dime. Simply not worth the possible issues. At least for me.

I'll add that with Chevy and most domestic dealerships, they have a dedicated "lube" department. These are typically young, low paid workers. I got my start as a lube guy at a Ford dealer years ago. I also worked at Jiffy Lube in high school. I wouldn't tell anyone to go there. That company and most like it are a joke.

Same here on both. I did my own oil change on the Z last week. I also got my start at a Ford dealer changing oil. I went on to be a commission tech, but I wouldn't want those guys handling my car nowadays. Cars are much more expensive now and many can't be lifted without knowing proper technique or using pucks. I don't even think I'm gonna get my spring replacement done now, and my parts are in. Just can't bring myself to take the car in for the work.

Small world, right? I've been a BMW Tech for the last 15 years, so I have mixed opinions on letting anyone else touch my cars. We work on expensive cars on a daily basis, and the guys in my shop are very careful. I have half a million dollar Porsches being worked on in the stall next to me, so a high level of responsibility is needed. I feel like it's just a different mentality. I'm the tech that handles most of the "particular" M car owners.

Unfortunately, I don't feel like I get that kind of service with GM. I took my first Corvette to the Chevy dealer across the street one time, and was very disappointed in the quality of work and attention to detail. They damaged one of my rocker panels and didn't even clean off the differential after doing a warranty fluid replacement. Never again.

Sorry to read this. Hope it works out for you...

I would never use Dealership Service unless I really had to. I would never claim to be the best mechanic, but I always am willing to learn and do everything I can on my own...I don't want anyone touching my baby, unless it is way above my abilities...and even then I would probably find someone better than a dealership apprentice :(

I have lost faith in ALL service departments. All they have to do is treat the car with respect and pay attention to detail. Good luck with that.
