What happens when it comes time for resale though? Do you just file a diminished value claim, pocket the money up front, take it to the shop multiple times as issues arise, and then sell it at a reduced value with the buyer's understanding that the car may be prone to future failures and that the warranty on any past service may not be transferrable?

Any flood damage will make a car virtually unsellable, as it should be. Once again, in South Louisiana, salt water intrusion ensures that electrical problems will never go away. This does not even begin to address the damages to brakes, bearings, differentials and other mechanicals.

Who on this forum would buy a car that has a CarFax disclosure of flood damage in a known salt water area?

Is flood damage repairable? Is my car worth fixing? Everything is repairable, for a price. But you can dry a car completely and still have musty odors, silt in the seats and carpets, and electrical issues. If you drove into a flooded area, you may have taken water into the engine. In general, water that goes past the floorboards -- into the areas where electronics begin -- will mean the car is totaled.

Not all insurance companies even notify Carfax... I would never only trust a report from them...

We just had a new Jeep under water up to the seats. We replaced the engine. No problems. Diminished vale is something you receive when another party does damage to you. I don't know how car facts reports. Somebody else would have to tell you. It might just show a claim under comprehensive coverage????
