Just in case you end up in the grass at the track or have a mechanical failure...or end up in the neighbors pool. Easier for the tow truck to hook up to and get on a trailer if you have a winch...and less damage from the careless tow truck driver.

Not only that, even on the street if you need a tow on a flat bed it is easier to wench up with the splitter being to low.

Which will prevent this type of scenario. Standing there holding your breath as the tow truck pulls your ZL1 out of the dirt on the side of the on ramp hoping there is no underside damage from the tow trucks hooks. It doesn't help when the CHP officer is shaking his head and laughing at how you ended up that way to begin with! Cold GY F1 tires and too much throttle, true story.
