Not worth it in my opinion...I have contemplated a move from a 2SS to a ZL1, J can't justify the $20-25k more, with a huge hit in resell. SS is plenty fast and quick on the street for me.

It's a matter of preference, comfort with that type of expense, and the deal and options you want to get being available - because you clearly don't want to settle on any detail at the ZL1 price point.

I just got my first ZL1 last week. I went from a 650RWHP 5th Gen SS. I somewhat expected it to be just a nicer version of what I had (because I was even taking a raw HP hit). I was completely wrong. It's very difficult to explain, but it's a completely different class of car. It cannot be compared to the SS. When you're comparing the ZL1 you have to compare it to the cars it was destroying in the MotorTrend reviews. And the '17 ZL1 is a different animal than the 5th gen. Anyone that hasn't driven can't really speak to it's capabilities.

This will be a terrible analogy, but it's like trying to compare a McDonald's burger to a restaurant burger (and I don't mean to say the SS is a McDonalds burger - just follow me for a minute). It's tough to do a comparison like that because they're really two different things - and they mean to be two different things intentionally. So if you want to compare a restaurant burger you need to compare it to other restaurants. Like I said, just a terrible example I made to demonstrate how hard it is to do a comparison, not to say SS is bottom of the line, cheap, McDonalds, etc, let me just stop all the soap box responses people are typing up right there. I loved my SS and kept it for just under 7 years.

Needless to say, in my opinion it was worth every penny.

I would be going from a 6 gen. SS. I agree even the SS is no comparison from 5 gen

Well for starters the 6th Gen SS performs similiar 5th Gen ZL1. The weight dif of the chassis goes a long way. The 5th Gen SS can have all the power in the world but it will still feel heavy a la Hellcat.

Not a fair comparison at all going from a 5th gen SS to a 6th Gen ZL1.

The SS has plenty of power and it's NA which is awesome. I would never do take that much of a loss for more power when the SS bonestock is a beast in its own. But if you have the cash do it!

I'd love to drive a ZL1 simply to experience the huge performance upgrade from a standard SS. I can't use what my 1SS has to offer, much less what the ZL1 offers. Like owning a MP-5 sub machine gun, but one can only shoot it on semi auto.

In my opinion it's the same as going to a 1LE in an SS......much less a ZL1.....Unless you can TRACK the car occasionally....WHERE can you actually USE all that handling and power?

I'd love to OWN a ZL1 but could not rationalize the price difference between it and a std SS.

The ZL1 is in a different class than the 'normal' SS, but that's not to say you can't use either for the same things. I actually had the opportunity and means to grab either a nightfall ZL1 or a F1FTY SS, and I ended up with the SS based on my realistic philosophy of use, and I REALLY like the interior on the anniversary car. Sure, it would be amazing to have a car that I could take to the strip or track that is absolutely meant to be there, but what am I going to use it for 99% of the time? For me, the answer is daily driving and very occiasional trips to the strip/track just for some fun, i.e. NOT super competitive in nature. For me, as others have alluded to, it wasn't worth the extra $20K, higher insurance, and higher level of anxiety for when it's parked at the grocery store, when I can barely tap into the SS's performance on the street...legally �� So if I were you, I'd take a realistic look at the amount of time you'd be taking advantage of the 'extras' on the ZL1, and go from there.

i agree that my SS has plenty of power to get in trouble... i hit the gas, the tires spin, the car goes fast enough. but I'd love to have the wider wheels/tires .... yeah folks will say I can get wheels and tires but the mfgr does many little things to make sure the wheel size "works" ... fenders flared, alignment, power steering changes, who knows...

my SS has performed flawlessly for 11k miles so far so I'm resistant to making changes. I see folks who mess with their cars have issues, so i'm gonna leave it alone for now and enjoy it as is, it is a blast.

Maybe look into the Callaway convesion...630 hp for $17k, covered by GM warranty. It doesn't have all the handling upgrades, but is a lot cheaper.
