DETROIT — When GM opened up the unveiling of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro to the first 1,000 fans to register at the ********* Web site, the automaker knew response from the public would be enthusiastic. But no one at Chevy was prepared for the slots to fill up in just over eight hours.
"We were very surprised," Chevrolet spokesman Monte Doran told Edmunds. "We thought it would take a few days or a week to fill the available spots, so the response far exceeded our expectations."
When asked why the May 16 unveiling at Belle Isle Park in Detroit was limited, Doran responded: "Really it's the space inside the reveal tent. We are using existing infrastructure for the Belle Isle Grand Prix, and the tent could only hold 1,000 people."
But those 1,000 fans will be in pony-car heaven.
In addition to being among those present at the world debut of the all-new sixth-generation Camaro, they'll also be able to ride along on hot laps of the race course in 2015 Camaro Z/28 models and then take a parade lap in their own Camaros.
"It should be an amazing experience," said Doran.
Chevrolet is veering away from the conventional approach to unveiling a new vehicle, which is usually the domain of traditional auto shows.
Chevrolet has arranged special giveaways for Camaro-unveiling participants, and the event will also include food and beverages, as well as vendors selling a variety of merchandise.
A special treat for the fans will be a Camaro Museum, with 25 cars ranging from the 1967 Camaro VIN 16, believed to be the oldest production Camaro in existence, to the original 2006 Camaro concept that preceded the fifth-generation production model.
The 2016 Camaro will begin arriving at Chevrolet dealerships later this year.

I'll be heading up from Oklahoma. I plan to leave Wednesday, I hope my packet arrives by then. Stopping overnight in St. Louis, half way, then finishing Thursday/Friday.

There's a tent for the unveil. Otherwise - bring an umbrella! Haha!

I guess that lets us off the hook on the pre-event detailing.

Don't bet on it. This is Michigan. It was suppose to be a BAD day last Saturday for the Rodger's Chevrolet Car Show. Only sprinkled for a few minutes after Iwas already there and parked. NP the rest of the day. Plan on it being nice on the isalnd.

Wait. What? I'm into my second day of detailing already. Oh well. Can't quit now. You know how anal some of us Camaro owners are.
It wouldn't be the first time it has rained on my parade, or the second or third or so on.
Plus, I'm sure the car won't get dirty at all on the six and a half hour drive to Detroit.
Really looking forward to Saturday, clean or dirty.
