Exposed carbon roof

I wonder if it may show up as an option. I would love for exposed carbon on a white car.

I think that would look terrific.

The Corvette gets the exposed carbon roof because the roof is removable. The Camaro roof panel is fixed, if not structural. It would look cool but I don't know if it would work for the Camaro.

I seriously doubt it. It would require a HUGE investment in crash testing to verify the strength of the carbon roof if they made it out of real carbon fiber.

No doubt it would pass, but the cost of the additional testing to verify it would be enormous.

Now a carbon wrap would be a whole different ballgame. They could do that.

It would be more involved but the BMW M cars have optional exposed carbon on there fixed roof vehicles.

Yeah. I would have to look into the M cars. I don't know if it's just a visual thing that goes over the sheet metal. I do know it's real carbon though.

Yes, the M3 had (not sure about the current gen) a carbon roof.

Keep in mind, there are two types of carbon. I call them SHOW, where you can see the weave, and cheap where you just paint over it because you aren't using color or continuous sheet. We even used chopped carbon on the floor of the C6 Z06. So to do a show roof would be ridiculously expensive. The paint GM uses on the show carbon for the Corvette is like $1,000 per gallon or something along those lines. But you can certainly bond in a roof panel if you design for it. I just don't think we'll see that on anything short of the Z/28.

So painted CF? Maybe....Z/28 ish. Show CF? Not likely.

This is precisely why the exposed carbon insert on a ZL1 is a $600 option.
All ZL1 inserts are carbon fiber, but for the exposed ones, they have to take extra care to make sure the carbon fabric is laid down nice and even because you will see the weave.
With a painted insert, the evenness of the weave is nowhere near as critical.

If a exposed carbon fiber ZL1 hood insert is a $600 option, can you imagine the price of an entire roof panel?

That just adds weight.

And personally there is little I hate more in our world than FAKE Carbon Fiber. When we did the C5 LeMans Special Edition which had GM's first CF hood, the put blanking stickers on it.
