F-Body?

I've had several people try to tell me that a 5th gen Camaro is not a F-Body. I have a 2010 2SS and mine has a "F" in the 4th position, in the VIN, so mine is definitely a "F-Body". So all you people who have 5th gens that are not "F-Bodys", tell me what is in the 4th position of your VIN. There has to be something there and if yours is not a "F-Body", it has to be something other than "F".

Like Jeff said, Zeta is what the 5th gens are built on. But they kept the "F" in the vin to kinda honor the f-body designation from the earlier gen Camaros. I imagine the 6th gen, even being on the Alpha platform, will probably (and hopefully) continue this

Kind of ironic in a way, the Zeta body (greek alphabet now used) platform Camaro has a "F" in the VIN, and the original "F" (Latin alphabet GM formerly used) body platform Camaros didn't have an "F" in the VIN.
It should be noted that "Zeta" is the 6th character in the Greek alphabet and "F" is the 6th character in the Latin/Roman alphabet we use, I guess just to further confuse things. You see A Greek "Zeta" = Latin/Roman "F". So in effect they are Greek F-bodies!

Regardless of what the forth position is in the VIN this is not an F body car. The F in the VIN was added for the purists and as a tribute to the previous Camaro. That's a fact. It is based on the Zeta II platform. You can ask the engineers, fbodfather, and Chevy and they will all tell you the same thing. The G8/Commodore/Chevy SS share the same platform and are not F-body cars.

The 5th gen Camaro is technically not a F-body because it's not based on the GM "F Platform", which is what the 1967-2002 Camaro/Firebird was based on. Like mentioned above, 5th gens are built on the Zeta (more specifically, Zeta II) platform. Zeta originated in Australia. GM added the "F" in the 5th gen VINs for historical and legacy reasons.

Ok, let me see if I've got this straight.......Every 5th gen has a "F" in the "body" position in the VIN, but they are not "F-Bodys" In every other car that GM makes this position designates the body line, but in the 5th gen this position is just honorary. Sounds to me like you guys are going to great lengths to keep from calling your "F-Bodys" a "F-Body".

The Camaro is an 'E' body. Same as a G8 and Caprice.

You can say that is an honorary "F-Body" car. But it is not based on F-Body platforms before it.

It is not accurate to call it an F-Body

VIN be damned, it's a Zeta II platform, hence an E-Body

Seems like you are going great lengths to call your non F Body Camaro a F Body

Ok.....So now everybody is trying to convince me that it's not a F-Body(Even though we all know it really is, because it's in the VIN of every damn one them!), because it's on a different platform than Gens 1 through 4. Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but gens 1 through 4 were all on different platforms from each other and they were all F-Bodys, so I believe it is possible for GM to build the 5th gen on yet another (Zeta II)platform and it still be a F-Body. As a matter of a fact, I know it is....I just walked out to the garage and looked and my 2010 still has a "F" in the body position. If these arguments were true, the 1st and 2nd gens wouldn't be F-Bodies either, they share their platforms with the 2nd and 3rd gen X-Bodies. The only generations not to share their platforms with another body was the 3rd and 4th and the only reason for that was that during the 80's and 90's most other platforms were FWD. You guys don't seem to understand the difference between the platform and the body. The platform(Zeta II in this case) is the basic suspension architecture. This can underpin several different bodies(Monaro, G8, Super Sport, Caprice PPV, Commodore, etc). The body(F in this case) is the structure and sheet metal that is attached to the platform. The body can be shared across several divisions (brands), but is always on the same platform. The bodies are always assigned a letter. And that letter is in the 4th position of the VIN.
