Depends

Most (all?) factory stripes are just decals. Some owners (like Dfault) have had them painted on.

Just look closely at the car in person, you'll be able to tell pretty easily if they're decals.

If they are decals do they come off without damaging the paint?

Yes the factory stripes come off very easily if you let it sit in the sun during summer. They should peel off almost without with residue.

The downside is you might wind up with the ghosting depending on how long they've been on there. I also had to remove the spoiler on mine to get them completely off. Which is when I discovered the spoiler has rubbed paint down to primer on the ends.

The stripes on mine has been on pretty much for 5 years.

I wouldn't worry about fading or shadowing. My 2011 Camaro had the factory stripes from when it was built in late 2010. The dealership I bought my car from removed the stripes a month before I bought the car in December 2013. Someone else was interested in the car and didn't want the stripes. The removed them, then the person couldn't secure financing and couldn't buy the car. I bought it a month later and had factory striped reinstalled. While the car didn't have stripes, there was now indication that it ever had them.

Heck, we removed the body side molding on my fathers 2001 Silverado last year. You can tell it ever had them.

This is going to depend on the condition the car and paint was kept in. My 2010 after 5 years the paint underneath was ever so slightly darker. Also the clear coat was obviously in a different shape as well. I haven't done a full polish on it yet to see if I can repair the clear coat completely though.
