It can use any bolt - not a proprietary one - and without any modification to the BCG. It works by replacing the cam pin, for an $11 "enhanced cam pin". You are right about it sticking you in the ribs, but I don't think it is large enough to be a super major inconvenience. If it is an issue, I could have a machinist make it fold.

Nope - it would be facing toward you. It is located on the left side of the upper receiver, if you are looking down the barrel, NOT into the barrel (normal position)

I looked at that, but far more expensive :/

Sure you can special order side charging uppers on the left hand side but they are the exception, not the rule when it comes to AR's.
I would beg to differ. Most side chargers are left side, for right handed shooting, or ambidextrous (left & right side).

I have an XDS .45 3.3" that I carry daily. I use an Alien Gear holster, right above my wallet pocket, canted forward. Best holster I've found for the money. Get the leather straps, not the metal - the metal clips end up chewing through jeans within a year.

Guys, I just got a new .308 so what kind of scopes are you running? I'm looking in the ~$500 range, 3x-??, no preference on manufacturer it's just for hunting season and next year I'll upgrade (hopefully).

Thanks shibbs and mike g I'll let you know what I pick up. I think I got it narrowed down to the m & p shield and the xds. I'm going to rent them both at the local range and see what I like better.

Vortex ! I don't highly and confidently recommend much of anything, but you want a Vortex!

I hava a Viper HSLR FFP that was mounted on my .308..... took a risk and mounted it on the .50bmg, flawless! Check out their reviews on any site.

I second this.

Vortex are great scopes and their warranty is without a doubt second to none. They have a 100% lifetime no questions asked warranty. If 10 years down the road you break it, even if it's your own fault they will repair or replace it.

I love my M&P! It's comfy in MY hands and after 500 rounds through I really have no complaints. I have no experience with the XDS.

The M&P is a GREAT gun for the money! I really did like shooting it. However it's just a hair thicker than the XDS, and the XDS is in a larger caliber. Fewer rounds, but larger caliber. Also, to me the XDS just feels more solid in the hand.

Extended-length magazines are available for both models.
Both are available in 9mm.

Pros/cons XDS:
Pro- avail in .45
Pro- less than an inch thick
Pro- great feel in the hand--natural sight lines/grip angle for me
Pro- Adjustable backstrap without having to buy additional pieces
Pro- Comes with a nice kit with owb holster/extra mag/extra mag holster
Pro- Fiber Optic front sight! So nice in lower light situations!
Con- Bit of a rough trigger feel until a few hundred rounds are through it**
Con- Limited (but steadily increasing) accessory availability (due to newer model)

Pros/cons M&P:
Pro- Cheaper
Pro- More comfortable for longer shooting sessions
Pro- Been around longer, more parts available for customization**
Pro- Available in .40 (if you're a fan of snappy recoil )
Con- Thicker
Con- To adjust grip diameter, need to purchase new grip assemblies separately
Con- Shorter barrel - I found to be less accurate than my XDS

**I don't recommend customizing ANY pistol used for carry. Worst case scenario, if you do end up using it, it may be seen as "premeditated" by the prosecution.
