Do you use 5w30 or 0w40 ?

Just picked up my ZL1. About 2.5k miles from my first oil change (as I change every 3-4K and it was just changed when I bought it) .

But been doing research. I’ve heard good things about both 5w30 and 0w40. Wanting to use M1 as it’s readily available and what the dealer uses.

I keep seeing mixed answers on “use 5w30 because that’s what the manual says to use” and people swearing by 0w40 for protection and good oil pressure.

Are there any benefits to using one or the other? I live in the south so real hot summers. Not to cold of winters. I’ve seen M1 0w40 has closer viscosity to 5w30 with a lot more additives for protection. I also plan to be H/I/E , pulley, tuned, injectors. Etc. So it won’t be some 1k + RWHP. But won’t be no slouch either. I used 0w40 in my 370z (it was known for hot oil temps and breaking down without an oil cooler, I ran 0w40 in it and had good results)

To the oil gurus out there, Would 5w30 or 0w40 be better for my setup? Also what oils do you guys use?

I'm not a guru. I prefer to give broad answers sometimes for other people and situations being included. I'd go full synthetic and not 0-20 unless in a super cold climate nor 10 40 unless in Vegas summer city driving or something.
That being said on cars with variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation (not the ZL1) it's more important to stay close to what the OEM dictates or it might throw codes.

Hmm so is 0w40 not as popular as I thought in the LSA platform?

Hmm... okay I’ll go with M1 5W30 I suppose. Just thought some people would chime in of 0w40 benefits!

I started running Mobil 1 0W-40 5 years ago when I swapped cams. The additive package is definitely better compared to their standard 5W-30. I think it's especially helpful when you run E85 on a regular basis.

I ran 5w30 M1 before cam, and now Redline 5w30 after cam (which is higher measured viscosity than M1 of same weight)

Hmm. So if I don’t plan on cams. Is 0w40 still a good option for me? I just have heard really good things regarding their 0w40 and how the viscosity of it is comparable to higher brands (amsoil, RL, etc 5W30) ... I’ve seen a few blackstone oil analysis to confirm.

Thanks for the input! I was hoping to get something more readily available that’s still quality stuff. Who’s got the fastest shipping I can order from?

I always order my Redline from Amazon in the gallon containers and get it in 1 or 2 days.

I use Driven LS on recommendation from Hutter Racing. They seem to think its as good as it gets for my application.
