Yes Ely is a small town, but there are a lot of hotels, here's a list http://www.sscc.us/hotel_information.aspx You will have to attend the new racer school Thur AM. You can either stay in Vegas Wed night or just show up to the track on Thur morning, so you will need a room for Thur, Fri, Sat and Sun if you're going to the awards banquet in Vegas Sunday night. Sams town is the sponsor hotel of Silverstate and rooms are cheap for us, just make sure you say your with Silverstate. There is so much info on their site and i was lost my 1st time, so read it and let me know if you have any questions, i will be more then happy to help. Now Ely will fill up, that's why i wrote the post to get your rooms now.

Now just remember guy's that you do have to go thru tech inspection, so make sure you understand what exactly you need. Tech inspection for you is different then for me because of the class and speed difference, but you still have to pass it.For instance the one thing i missed in the rule book my 1st time was i needed metal valve stem caps, but i was able to get those in Ely. I didn't have to do the new racer school cause of my racing experience, but i think you all will have to, and you will be going thru tech in Vegas, so it is easier to get something if you missed it. Just from memory all you need is an approved helmet, fire extinguisher metal valve stem caps, and your tires have to be good, they will be part of the tech process.

I still have some interest in this. I see some posts about 'lack of interest.' It isn't fizzling out is it?

How many cars are on the 90 mile course at a given time? (roughly)
Are "Walkabout" Motorola handheld radios suitable as "scanners?"

So, I'm reading the rules about restraint systems. In the Touring or Grand Touring classes, can you drive a bone-stock car? (with fire extinguisher and other mandatory items) In other words I guess, could you conceivably drive a Camaro off the lot in Vegas and race in this event in the two lower classes as a first timer?

The cars are released at one minute intervals, you will never see another car during the run down the course. I would imagine there are around 30 cars. Im not sure if it is fizzing out, but believe me if so it is their loss. Over the couple years i have talked about this event there has been a lot of interest which is why i posted the thread, but i am more then disappointed (that's a challenge to you Camaro guy's)with the Camaro community, there are always a bunch of Mustangs there. I dont know about the "walkabout" handhelds, but just call them and they will tell you. Yes, you can take a right off the showroom floor car and run the Touring class, it's not till Grand Touring that you need a different restraint system. Now remember unless you have racing experience(determined by them you can get a waiver from the new racer school)you have to take the new racer school and then run the touring class. Hope you can make it and be one more Camaro to make a presence over the Mustangs that are always there. If you haven't watched the race(video) i posted is is of great quality and you can see the whole thing and know what it's like.

Any of you guy's or anyone who reads this from like, Nevada maybe, know anyone who could shoot video us us? This is what im thinking, someone could sign up to be a course worker and have access to us running the course, i know i would love to see my car cruising past at 159MPH. They always need course workers, and i believe they even pay $, not sure how much, but it would still be cool to be a spectator, as there will be some incredible speed to be seen.

No worries, there's always next year. They run it twice a year, May and Sept.

I'm in. Signing up this week, and bringing a buddy as my navigator. First time, Touring class. Should be fun! Expensive "race", so not sure I'll continue year to year (prefer the local NASA/SCCA events), but figured, what the hell!

Glad you can make it, you will have a great time. Yeah it isn't the rush of tearing up the track turn after turn, but there's something so peaceful having a public highway all to yourself, and for you your speed limit is 124, mine 165. One good thing is there is no wear and tear(like tracking) it's just a fast Sunday drive. This picture im including looks boring, but when you are there standing in front of it and knowing that beyond this point the road is YOURS for 90 miles
