Yeah, well kudos to Ford for making the GT500 (no matter the cost) able to beat the ZL1 (in most cases).

We can argue the 10-20K cost difference (MSRP)
The years it took
The specific tracks

It is a faster car, generically.

For me it came down to cost and timing. Before I bought my ZL1 a local Ford dealer had a Ford performance blue with white vinyl stripes base GT500 with Recaros for $74k msrp + $15k ADM = $89k. Problem is they wouldn’t let me test drive it, which I guess I can understand. I was also coming from a bolt on 2018 GT premium with A10, MagneRide, and PP1, and I sort of wanted something different if I was going to spend that much money. To pile on, I got my ‘21 ZL1 ($69k msrp) for under msrp, so the GT500 would have been almost $25k more expensive.

I love the look of the GT500 as much as the ZL1. I agree the ZL1 is better in most performance metrics except for acceleration above 60 mph. I love my ZL1 but I’d say the Shelby GT500 has a little more clout to the locals, but the ZL1 definitely holds its own in that regard. GT 5.0s are a dime a dozen here so I was glad to get something more unique in the ZL1.

Because of one model: ZL1. However, since chevrolet has canceled the camaro, the possibility of a GT500 or even a GT is very real in the future.

1.) If you exclude the last 1-2 years of price hikes, the price of a typical GT500 was roughly the cost of 2 basic ZL1s. The price hikes I'm referring to are the massive increases by GM on the Camaro. My 2018 ZL1 base price was 61k, and with options, was just under 68k. Roughly the same car now costs about 77k.

2.) The ADM on the GT500 is absolutely atrocious. 99.9% of people are not getting the car for MSRP, and I call BS on most who claim they did. Can it happen? Sure... but literally every GT500 I've ever seen has had anywhere from 10-30k mark up on it.

3.) All GM had to do was throw in a pulley upgrade, trans tune, and maybe a better intake and the stock ZL1 would be around 725hp...this would have easily got many more buyers involved. Even if you did a full blower swap/tune, it would still be infinitely cheaper than a GT500 and you'd be faster...

4.) Yes, I know modding cars changes the game, but when one car is roughly 35-50k more, and the only real advantage is extra HP, I feel it's warranted.

5.) If we're being 100% honest, if I'm spending $120k for a GT500, I'm just buying a C8 Z06 at that point...
