I've been thinking about this:

Why are they testing this ZL1?

Testing the rear bumper cover (fascia)?

Or testing the new LT5 underhood?

Is it an updated LT4 with port and direct injection and MORE power?

Just automated emergency braking?

I need to know!

I'm thinking that if there was a different RPO code engine under the hood, it would be camofaluged and/or locked. Seeing neither, I suspect it's a fuel economy / cert car with same powertrain as 2018, but with the rear camoflauged in order to not give away the rear fascia tweaks.

Secondly, I'm very disappointed that they are not going to upgrade the Zl1's front. It is ok, but the new one is always better. Looks like the SS's front will look better.
They’re testing that swanky new CB antenna mount and the new increased front ride height springs.

Thank you! That makes perfect sense to me.

Fuel economy / certification.

So every model year has to cert with or without changes.

We laymen don't think of this stuff.

Yes, even minor equipment changes can sometimes trigger differences in emissions, fuel economy, test weight class. An MCE or minor upgrade would definitely have enough content changes to require recertification. I can recall instances where cars with an optional paint pushed a car into a different weight class. Similar with full size spare vs donut spare vs no spare.

There could still be power improvements under the hood. But I find it hard to believe that the hood is unprotected if there is an RPO change. Combining port plus direct injection would drive an RPO change.

Maybe they’ll do Gen 5 all over again and remove the amazing stylish taillights for some Oldsmobile style taillights.

Gotta love opinions.

I happen to think the dash is fine and has good character. And I also think the 2014 refresh shows (in my opinion) that new is not always better.

I think the 2014 looked much better than the '10-'13. It definitely looked much cleaner, especially the rear end.
