Ran an M4 this weekend at event

Local street racing made safe event and there's a guy with an M4 who wanted to run me. 40-130 per his request and max the track allows for. I thought I would win due to the motor trend comparison but after doing some research these cars are severely underrated and are dyno'ing 420whp and running 118-121 stock 1/4 trap speeds. So we honk off and after we shut down at 130 he was up half a car length. Not sure how forum rules are about videos even though this is a sanctioned event but if you want to see it PM me.

The motor trend comparison was an overall track event, not a roll race in a straight line. There's a difference there. One is power/gearing (aero if high enough speeds) only and the other is an all encompassing test of power, gearing, traction, handling, aero, alignment, etc. etc.

As long as the event was legal and a track event, I don't think mods will have an issue with it.

It's street racing on open roads that is an issue.

Yep! I thought about it after and it made sense. Roll race the bmw has the slight edge. Also forgot to mention mine is an A8 and he had the DCT trans

Run him again from a dig!

You have the A8, he has the DCT.. that will be interesting!

Motor Trend tested the Manual vs Manual and the SS won 68 out of 75 times against the M4.

Only down half a car to the M4 is a pretty good showing for the Camaro.

If I remember, MT said the M4 had definite problems putting down the power from a dig. A hundred or two RPM too high or too low drastically affected results. He raced you in the best situation. Also I believe the M4 is not using SAE ratings, but rather what BMW "says" it does. I've heard these may be heat-soaked ratings, so in reality the car will make noticeably more power in good conditions.

Race is a race if terms are agreeable. He set the terms for him to win. Sucks but next time you know his game.

Because he has a turbo car he wants to be in boost when you guys leave or he has no power. I would say start off at 0 mph and no throttle. When the hand, flag or light drops give it the hammer. This will drastically change the outcome because your v8 gets in power quick where his 3L turbo needs time to produce bigger numbers. Also why in a race course if the m4 driver ever slips and lets off the throttle he loses his boost and the Camaro will walk away.

Would like to see the video though.

I agree here, I didn't think about how his terms were in his favor. Call him up and run it again!

Time to mod up a little. Just a simple tune and CAI/PTB will get you a half car lead. Always fun when it is legal. Thank you for sharing this.

M4's are not slow cars by any stretch. They will run well out hole and even better from a roll. A friend in our shop has one modded. If we added a driver mod, that car would be very hard to beat.

As for what Drivinagain stated, no one, exp a turbo car would give you a zero throttle race. In fact if you go to the track, you will find few people who actually come off the line at zero throttle, N/A or F/I. For a turbo car to do so would truly put it at a HUGE disadvantage. You might as well just give 1 and the hit.....it may even be more forgiving that way....

Thanks for sharing your story. Their isn't much for me to add because all the responses are spot on. Like it was said earlier, don't give up YOUR advantage to someone just because they ask for it.....a dig race is the bread and butter for the Camaro and it should be a "sticky" for all owners to memorize and abide by. I'm glad you had a good time and I look forward to the rematch.

P.S. turbo guys can easily ramp up the boost with higher octane and leave you choking on their dust so make sure your not out-gunned before it even starts.

Yeah,,,, run him again, beat him, and then share the video.

Seriously, I think it is ok to post the video since it was done on race track.

Sanctioned events allowing ricer roll racing?

Tell him to man up and go from a dig, like a real race.

They are underrated and turbo cars do well in the top end of the power delivery. If M4's don't launch well like someone suggested and figuring in the torque of the SS it may have looked different from a launch. I'm not saying he wouldn't have still won, but I think the rolling start favored him in terms of being in boost and traction.
