they chose a mpg oriented overdrive 6th gear vs a pulling 6th gear, the car pulls like a freight train to 173mph tacked in 5th ...why they picked that 6th gear..idk..

You might be surprised...
Let's put the gear ratio thing to fact:
MM6 is the TR6060 in the SS. MJK is the TR6060 in the ZL1. |

ZL1 has a less aggressive 1st, 2nd, 3rd. This is for durability ("torque rating") and a lesser need for the mechanical advantage of the SS gearing. But the ZL1 has a more aggressive 5th and 6th...

For comparison, here are the gear ratios for the 5th gen ZL1
Explains why 6th gear has less pull than the 5th gen. Transmission: Hydra-Matic 6-Speed Automatic with TAP-Shift 6L90E (MYD) Gear Ratios: First: 4.03 Second: 2.36 Third: 1.53 Fourth: 1.15 Fifth: 0.85 Sixth: 0.67 Reverse: 3.06 Final drive ratio: 3.23 Tremec 6-Speed Manual TR6060 (MG9) Gear ratios: First: 2.66 Second: 1.78 Third: 1.30 Fourth: 1.00 Fifth: 0.80 Sixth: 0.63 Reverse: 2.90 Final drive ratio: 3.73

Well my friend has a 1LE with a supercharger $8200 with tune . And he got it installed for 1100. And before you say anything about the 1LE is cheaper then a 2SS. And his car runs 11.20 all day. The 13 zl1 was way to slow for that much money.

So that's 62mph or 100kmh in first in the zl1vs 54mph in the SS.
Helps traction in 1st gear also 0-60 bragging rights I would bet 90% of the 0-60 improvement over the SS is rubber and that lack of shift rather the power Fwiw Cam the LT1 with ls7 lifters and shift at 7k you will hit 60 as well...ala c6z |

The ZL1 is so much more than just a supercharger, if you can't get that then maybe you aren't a car guy. When the ZL1 came out in 12, what was faster at a comparable price?

If all you want to do is run a 1/4 mile, why even buy a 1LE? I think you meant to say your friend bought a 1SS. |

I sometimes wonder why people come in the ZL1 thread and say how bad it sucks, how much better this or that car is.. I have owned a few different fast cars. The 5th Gen was the BEST GT for the money on the planet. I could spend 2xs or 4xs and get a better handling, lighter, maybe quicker, but the ZL1 will not go head to head against a Le Ferrari or a Pagani. It will see the likes of cars under 100k. And there are NOT too many, if any that matches up. Unless you like the sound of a rattle can and rides like a rattle can. I look forward to seeing if the 6th Gen crosses over and can be a track day car as well. Not straight line track but curves and downshifts and apexes.. I just cannot see a video of a man that I trust as far as I can drool and act like it's set in stone. In fact, we shall just have to see what the car does in real life

They have cafe standards to meet. They know guys will mod them, they build them so you can. The 5th gen is bomb proof.

The "Grave Digger" rear differential eats a good bit of power in the 5th gen ZL1 but it is bullet proof.
