Forgive the slight hijack but with some MY2016 models presumably running out of warranty later this year, are there any recommendations to get the car a more in-depth inspection in case any work is needed before they turn 3 years old and we get a reduced level of cover?

Technically that would be against GM's and just about all the other manufactures rules to bring a car, equipment or whatever in to see what's could be wrong with the car and repair it under warranty. You must have a valid complaint for them to cover a warranty repair. Not saying there isn't a way around it, like writing a new repair order, or bringing it in without writing a repair order. But in general, I think it's a huge waste of time when people get warrantitis. I don't think I have ever found a problem with anyones car when it almost runs out of warranty.

This is true. Only exceptions are obvious safety issues or in the case of Honda where I work, batteries that fail during the multi point inspection. Other than that the customer has to have a specific complaint to be covered under warranty.

That's a dealer specific thing, your particular dealership offered that above and beyond. GM as a company/car maker does NOT offer a lifetime engine warranty, hence the 5yr/60K mile powertrain warranty.
