Replacing the A/C evaporator or Blend door on a 5th Gen Camaro

If anyone has questions about replacing your A/C evaporator, Heater core or blend door, on a 5th Gen Camaro, I am here to help. I just replaced my A/C evaporator which involves removing the console, the whole dash, the tie bar and the evaporator case. It's not a job for a beginner DIY'er. But if you have mechanical experience, it can be done. And of course it will save you a TON of money. There are some things I can tell you that will help with the removal of a lot of parts. Also be aware that your looking at about a 2 day job.

One thing to remember about these and all instrument panels is, they were not put in the car piece by piece. They were installed as a complete assembly. That's exactly how you need to remove them. Once the windshield is removed I can have a Camaro dash out of the car in about a hour and a half.

How long then does it take to change out the part and reinstall that dash assembly?

You don't have to remove the windshield to remove the dash.

I live about 3 hours south of you in Palm Beach Gardens Florida. Give me a shout if you ever need help removing your dash. I can't promise you that it will be done in 5 hours. But you won't have to take out the windshield.

The more times you do it the faster you get. But I think you'll only have to do it once if it's for yourself. And that's going to take a while your first time.

He works for a GM dealer, he’s not cutting the bolt, or any other corners.

Exactly! I'm not hacking up my car or anyone else's! Those bolts are there for a reason (crashworthiness). I don't know why people have a problem with pulling the glass, any competent glass man can r&r it without breaking it. The very first one I did probably took me about 10 hours. With repetition I cut that in half. Once the console and column are out it's really not bad at all.

Totally understandable. I'm doing another one tomorrow and having the windshield pulled. Like Not A 45 said, tomorrows job should go way faster.

Second time will be faster for sure. Also, you don't have to seperate the hvac box from the dash to do the door....just flip it over and it's staring you in the face. Also one word of caution when you reinstall the dash. Be very careful to engage the drain tube with the hole in the floor or you will have water in the floor pan. Ask me how I know!

Thanks for that heads up. I've been as careful as possible lining up those drain tubes since I figured they were probably a problem child from the get go. But now I'm going to be even more cautious in the future. Glad to know that you work at a dealership. I'm sure you know the tricks on a lot of other Camaro things. Example: What's the best way to go about re-upholstering a front Drivers Seat???
