SS 1LE First oil change - Break in procedure

Hi everyone:

I'm approaching 500 miles and I'm planning on doing the first oil change. I was wondering what else fluids do I need to change besides oil change? Asking because I read the manual and hp supplement, I didn't find anything other than first oil change at 500 miles.

Based on what I read here, I listed a couple of things.

  1. rear differential fluid
  2. transmission fluid
Thanks!

I would suggest doing rear differential with your first two engine oil changes, my 1st one looked quite yucky, my second one looked better. Now I just do it every season.

As far as your transmission, I am not sure what everybody’s doing with the m6 for break in , it’s easy enough to do so that’s a bonus.

Definitely the rear differential from what I've read, but I don't think the transmission fluid is required.

I did the LSD (GM) and tranny (Tremec) at 500, 25k, and 50k. Seems to work well.

I recommend changing both the oil and the diff fluid at 500 miles. No need to change the transmission fluid then unless you absolutely want to. As others have said the diff fluid tends to be somewhat dirty looking. Plus changing it will help get rid of any remnants from breaking in the gears.

I have seen some people do swap out the trans fluid to something else and it might help make shifting a bit smoother. My 1-2 and sometimes 2-3 shifting can feel a bit more notchy and crunchy than I like until it gets temperature into the fluid. I have read that a different fluid can help with that. I would definitely do the diff fluid with the oil at 500, and if you want, do so again at 1500, then I follow the oil life indicator. People always say this is a waste but it gave me more peace of mind. I found the magnetic drain plug had material on it both times. Also, make sure your coolant levels are correct. There are two tanks. A lot of people had the expansion tank below where it should be from the factory, myself included. Main tank filled all the way up and the expansion tank to the cold line. Procedure to fill is in the owners manual.
