Made a cut out last night for installing the ZL1 fuel pump I used a dremel with the thin cut off wheel and made sure not to penetrate deeper than the sheet metal thickness - only took 20 min. Was careful and didn't touch anything underneath. Install was straight forward and then installed the FPCM.

Next up is the cam install.

Swapping out the Vengeance cam. Two broken lifters - the area around the outer pushrod cup collapsed the disk underneath was chewed and the retainer clip all distorted. Pushrod was holding it together. Engine ran fine right before tear down including some full throtle pulls. Got lucky I guess - looks like more than normal wear on the Vengeance VPRSP II Comp cam installed JUL 2013.

Put the new cam in yesterday and decided to inspect the oil pump. Damage to the gerotor gears. Looked like it ingested some metal maybe from the broken lifters. - time to order a new 10296 pump. :(

bummer! quick question...did you inspected/take any pic's of the lifter bores with the damaged lifters? based on what you wrote I don't believe they should have any damage but since the oil pump was damaged I would be checking that...and did ya get a bright light on the cam bearings too? if they had any scratches wonder about the main/rod's?

just helpin/hopin you get it all sorted out the first time.....good luck!

peace.

btw - post sum pics of the oil pump damage..plz..and cam too..

I did check the lifter bores they are perfect - same with the cam bearings. The roller lifters are slightly worn and the camshaft is showing signs it is starting to go. The pic of the two lifters by themselves are the two that had the pushrod cup break.

Pistons before and after

Pistons before and after. Cleaned up really easy with some carb cleaner and scotch brite. This LS3 has 35400 miles on the clock.

I see what you did here!!!! lulz....tks fer da pics...that cam definitely was about to go...the surface hardening was all but gone....wonder what it was about those 2 lifters? and which 2 were they? not adjacent were they?

the cam failing would explain the lifter rollers lookin like sh!t...I wonder if it was debris in the oil the got into the lifters pluggin them up and causin failure...

peace

I am not really sure - it was very odd but the two that broke cam off of different cylinders on opposite banks. As far as heat treating went, I count myself lucky since 2013 was in zone where they had heat treating issues and I figured since mine had gone so far without failure my cam must have had a proper heat treating...not that proper it seems.
