"Idle hours" on DIC???

So I know what idle means. But I can't figure out what the car counts as idle time. If it is accurate it goes up 1/10 of an hour every 6 minutes. But when does it start counting "idle time?" If I am stopped at a red light for 45-90 seconds does that add to the cumulative idle time? Does it start after the running vehicle has not moved for "X" amount of time? I am curious because my cars ratio of "engine hours/idle hours" seems really high on the "idle" side. I have not spent nearly half my hours idling. Someone enlighten me please

my guess is any time spent not adding miles is idle time. so yes, red lights and stop signs im thinking are counted as idle time.

Edit: did you see what the idle time was when you first got the car? some of it might be from QC or the dealer getting some revs in?

Yes there was definitely a couple of hours of idle that I didn't do.

Maybe idle hours is not under load? Like highway cruising in top gear, braking, stop signs, red lights?

I tried to Google this briefly and it seems to be an enigma how the manufacturers get this calculation.

I imagine that it is simply hours with the engine RPM set at idle speed. Basically 0% throttle input in park or neutral. I suppose that could include a manual trans car coasting in neutral, but I doubt it. Probably has to register 0% throttle and no wheel speed input.

Without any knowledge on the subject, I would guess that idle time is the amount of time that the engine was running while the wheels are not. So that would include every red light, stop and go traffic situation, etc.

Anyone check the owners manual to see if it says anything about this?

That's pretty cool you can see the engine hours. That's a neat feature to have if you upgrade anything and need the info for rebuild/maintenance purposes.
