"too bad its slow because it only has the 6 speed. I couldn't afford the auto"

I got this comment from an LS owner today. I thought it was interesting. (supposed to say "couldn't afford the auto" but I cant edit it)

He literally was embarassed to be driving the six speed because he couldn't afford the better automatic.

I personally think 6spd is much better than auto, and run a 6 Speed SS.

But I dont think anyone on here would view a six speed as being a sign of weakness? Do most non-automotive savvy people really think the automatic gives them a bunch of performance gains? Is there a reason someone would be embarassed to have a manual?

I was complimenting his car (base LS, but hey a camaro is a camaro). Maybe he was just intimidated by my modified SS? I just thought I'd get the perspective if anyone had any insight as to what the average person views between stick and manual (THIS IS NOT AN ARGUMENT AS TO WHICH IS BETTER ON THE CAMARO. while both can be argued, no one should be EMBARASSED to have either!)

2010 Camaro SS modified extensively. I stretched the body to make it a 4 door, but I swapped in the 3.6L DI V6 for fuel economy. Then I picked up a corvette body around the V8. I also swapped the body for a C2 Z28. (In short I traded it for three cars, a Corvette Z06r, a C2 Camaro Z28, and a Cadillac CTS Summer Performance package 3.6L DI with Aisin 6spd.)

I see it as a preference versus weakness. If you want to drive a stick, fine, if you want to drive an auto, fine....

Either way, the guy seems pretty insecure if he thinks a transmission choice is an important reflection of his financial or social status...

If you know how to drive, you can get more performance out of a stick, point blank period. I think he probably just doesn't know much about cars?

Wha? Did we timewarp back to 1951 when it was a status symbol to have an AUTO?

This debate is just stupid...drive what YOU like and worry about YOURSELF.

Rant off

Does that mean my 2SS isn't a muscle car since it's an auto?! I wanted a stick but my wife wanted the auto, so I compromised. It was either the auto or no Camaro, but i had no idea I was sacrificing not have a real muscle car anymore!!!

Not the case at all! With many modern cars the Automatics will outperform manual (Stick Shift) even with professional drivers. Computers and limiters can and will prevail over human senses. If I'm not mistaken the Automatic Camaro L99 actually posted fast 1/4 and 6 ft times than the stick cars even with the horsepower discripency

As a general rule, sometimes manufacturers are able to get more gas mileage out of automatics because they can program them to shift to the highest possible gear in every driving condition.

It also depends on the type of automatic. DCT/DSG/SMG type transmissions (non-hydraulic autos) can sometimes have a performance advantage. But for the most part, you need a very excellent driver in an automatic to be faster than a regular pro in a manual. The performance loss in a conventional hydraulic automatic is always greater than a similarly equipped vehicle with an optimized manual transmission.

drove a manual ls1 for 7 years so got pretty good at. in the market for an ls3 now and have test driven both. the auto shifts significantly slower than i can personally shift a manual. maybe not the case for your friend, or some people are just ignorant. you'll rarely find a professional race car driver in an automatic.

Both manual and auto are six speed transmissions.

I bought the auto (and paid a premium) because it's better imo- Just get stuck in a crawl along interstate traffic jamb for a couple of hours and see which one is best.
I know I'm adding fuel to the fire but why do we have too keep beating the same dead horse ?
