Agreed!!
[QUOTE=Matt @ FSP;6074150]Not taking it as argumentative, I'm glad that you have asked such a question actually.
That question can be posed about pretty much any upgrade on any car. The car already comes with a suspension, why replace it? The answer is plain and simple: pure performance. Flatter cornering, less deflection in the suspension joints and more consistent grip levels associated with the contact patch being planted on the pavement. The OEM suspension is fantastic, no doubt about it. But there are many concessions made in the interest of mass production and cost cutting that leave there more to be desired. Plus most cars from the factory are set up relatively soft which can overload the outside tires in a turn. One way to get the car to perform better is to simply get each tire perform more equal work when going around a turn and you do that by stiffening things up a big with bigger anti-roll bars and coilovers with upgrade spring rates, to name a few. This is stuff that the factory can not install for a variety of reasons, some having to do with costs and other associated with perceived ride quality. The adjustable coilovers in this thread actually RETAIN the full functioning Mag ride system that you bought the ZL1 for but makes it lighter weight, and adds ride height adjustability and stiffer spring rates to hold the car up a bit more in turns and lower it to the ground for a slightly better aero profile and flatter cornering. All of this contributes towards more grip and better performance. Any more questions please ask![/

Catch me if you can

So if the shocks are adjustable, how do you take in account of the Ride hieght bar needed for the sensor? If that's to long or short this will give the computer inaccurate data and charge/decharge the shocks incorrect.

For the few of you worried that this would not offer a significant increase in performance, do some reading on the inherent pros and cons of coilovers vs struts/springs. Magnetic ride control can continually adjust damping, maximizing the potential performance of the strut/spring, but that maximum is well below the maximum performance of a well designed coilover. OEM tends to stay away from coilovers because strut setups are easier and cheaper to deal with both in original manufacturing and in servicing, but the coilover is superior for tarmac performance. The stock ZL1 mag suspension is great. Assuming these coilovers are dialed in and optimized for the mag ride, they will bump that great up to absolutely incredible. A friend of mine has the KW Variant 3 coilovers on his CTS-V and that thing is a downright joy to put into corners.

Well I'm interested if not only for the ride height adjustability, and added static stiffness. My car is a 4x4 in my view (height wise).

Don't think so, last I read ,Pfadt's website said just get coilovers and abandon the Mag ride, could be wrong about that interpretation, but I don't want to give up my Mag ride.

At this point, might as well get an SS and with the money saved on MSRP you put in some killer suspension and engine modifications. At least then you are only throwing away a crappy suspension while saving alot for money. It's like spending extra money on an expensive badass computer from Alienware only to completely gut it out and put in new top of the line components. Might as well get a basic desktop and upgrade that with the same components. |
