Camaro SS1LE vs New G87 BMW M2

Got to drive the M2 this weekend at the track on the exact same tires as my car (Bridgestone RE71). I actually weighed both cars at the scales as well and they both weighed in identical at 3922 (with driver). Note that my car had 75lbs of ballast to make weight for competition so the Camaro is lighter.

Both cars had race seats and 4 point roll cage. I think this is as close of a comparison you can make.

Lap times were identical for both cars 1:17.2 at Roebling road raceway. I could probably get about another second out of both cars if I was going all out for pace but as it's not my car I was driving a little under the absolute maximum but still fast.

The M2 does rotate much better than the Camaro. The M2 is on aftermarket suspension but my SS1LE is on DSSV's as well. The M2 has more power to the wheels for sure but the Camaro has more lateral grip, probably due to wider tires. The fact that the M2 is so much more expensive and essentially delivers the same performance as the Camaro is pretty crazy, couldn't be happier I own the SS1LE.

So cool you were able to drive a lightly modded one against yours. The new M2 is SO FAST! But to your point, it feels pretty heavy in the middle of a corner or in transitions.

I can see myself in an M2 (g87) if I finally am able to give up a V8. The M2 is noticeably faster than SS’s in a straight line from what I have seen.

Well it should, it has about 50 more horsepower but everything it gains in the straights it loses under braking and cornering.

Thanks for the review. I had both a 2023 G87 M2 on order and and a Camaro 2SS/1LE on order. I have had many BMWs in the past and a Camaro 2SS. I missed the NA V8 and great manual gearbox and decided to stick with the Camaro especially since their demise in 2024. My 2SS/1LE had been produced but delivery was taking for ever and the car was just sitting in a lot for months. I got impatient and snagged a ZL1 in June. Canceled the M2 and 2SS/1LE. The ZL1 is a very special car and I am enjoying it.

In the past I have a lot of seat time at Roebling Road which is a fun challenging track.

Thanks for the review! It's interesting to read these two compared.
