Good job. Did you pull the ABS fuse? Pulling the fuse should let you foot brake more power before it overcomes the brakes. Those stock converters are super tight. Super easy 10's with a stall.

I hadn't heard of pulling the ABS fuse but I'll definitely give that a shot next time I go back. Since I've got you here, if you could recommend a converter based on the kit I got from you guys what would you recommend for this setup in order to put it in and keep it in the meat of the powerband? I got the base turbos from you guys. You can shoot me a PM or reply here, either one

If you are going to do a converter, build the trans while it is out....you'll save money in the long run.

I wouldn't bother, would do a 6l90 swap if you are going to do that.

Should be fine at your power level for a long time if you treat it well. Maybe add a nice cooler when you do converter, but other than that, enjoy going fast.

It's funny you mention that because my plan was to actually swap in a 6L90 eventually. I was told a few months ago to not spend a dime on building up the 6L80 but rather just put that money towards swapping in a tranny from the ZL1 and I planned on taking that advice. But a 90 was more of a long term plan considering the fact that it seems a ZL1 trans isn't exactly easy or cheap to get a hold of and I haven't found but one thread that covers the swap and it wasn't on this forum. The shop that's been doing my work hasn't done it before but said that they'd definitely do it for me but suggested a 4L80 for ease and availability but I'd rather stick with a 6 speed personally. So then it comes down to spend the money on a converter now and enjoy 10.50's as long as she holds together or be happy with low 11's until I can get together a 6L90 and a good stall for it then swap it in. And then turn up the boost of course.

Tune? Tuning and how you treat that trans plays a huge role.

As for the 6l90 swap, it is super easy. Just have to get the zl1 cross member and have your DS shortened. Kevin did it on his car so if you have questions just call him.

Yeah that definitely doesn't sound normal. From what I understand the trans tune in these 6L80's make all the difference in longevity. Either way that really sucks for your cousin and I'd be pretty pissed for sure.

It seems like the hard part is actually finding a ZL1 to get the parts off of. I haven't seen many 6L90's for sale on here and they don't seem to be common in the pick n pulls around here either. I know the 6L90 also came in the 2008+ 2500 series trucks (gas engines, not diesels) but they had a 6.0L they were paired with so I'm not sure if it would bolt up, if it would be tunable and all that other technical jazz.

Kevin just ordered a brand new one from dealer. Wasn't that much IIRC correctly. By the time he sold the factory trans in good shape, total out of pocket wasn't bad at all.

Wouldn't a ZL1 converter be a decent step up? Last time I priced them they were about $400.

The truck 6L90's have a different tail shaft section. Don't bother. Just get a new one from the dealer. Shop around should get you ~$3k complete with ZL1 cross member and they come with a new ZL1 converter. Then shorten front section of drive shaft 1.4". That's it. Sell 6L80 and ZL1 converter for whatever you can. Invest is a gooooood converter. They are $1500 and worth every cent.

6L80/90 trans tuning is critical. On a powerful car you need to use torque reduction on upshift and set it to throttle only. Your foot will be on the floor but it will halfway close and re-open the throttle in 1/4 second during the shift. That helps a lot.

So roughly $3k for the new 6L90 with cross member and then $1500 for a good converter (what specifically do you recommend?) so I'm at $4500 plus labor and trans tune. I'm assuming I could sell my stock 6L80 for $1500ish which softens that a little.

What is bouncing around in my head is the fact that just a converter would put this car in the mid 10's pretty easily, but if I could toss a converter and a 6L90 in this thing, I can turn up the boost to my next limiting factor which would be fuel at about 750rwhp. That being said, this car with a good converter and another 100~130 hp (I'm at 612/612 right now at 9psi of boost) could possibly put this car into the 9's?

Yes

$1500 is high on a converter. A circle D multidisc billet one is $1200 shipped. That is about as good as they get. I would start there, especially if you can do the labor yourself. It will drive nice, get into boost faster, and is the best upgrade you can do. I did a circle D 4c in my mustang and just daily driving it made a world of difference. Car is much more fun to drive.
