Wow a little rediculous to shoot the dog if it was still inside the van. Why couldn't the officer back up a step if the dog was barking and "lunging" in the window?

gah!!!! where to even start!!!
first... of course the dog is going to lunge at the window... that's his job... protect the domain and that "van" was it's domain... second... why the F was the dog left in a car while the owner was eating breakfast??? third... police was an idiot pits and labs look nothing alike!!! infuriating all together!!! Let me add some cop walks up and shoots my dog we are seriouly going to have some words... and my fellow C5'ers may have to take up a collection to bail my ass out! (Every owner says they have a well behave dog) some of ya'll got to meet my boy... but come in my yard or house un-invited and Titan will let you know that you are NOT supposed to be there!!!!

I would want more than just being kicked off the force..
I'm thinking that the increase of these incidences would lead the departments to a course in animal behavior... maybe a little education can go along way...

This one is on the dog owner. You don't lock up dogs in a van and leave them unattended. The window was also open or partially open and cops don't back off or go away, they have to control any scene they are on. A dog lunging at the police is going to get shot. Some simple use of common sense by that owner would have prevented that horrible situation.

My main problem here is that the officer didn't know what else was in the van.
Explosives? Tied up kids? He didn't know, but he popped off his gun.

You said it...."locked in the van".... Cop had no reason to shoot the dog. The window was partially left open but unless that dog could magically transform into weighing 50lbs less there's no way it gets out of that window. Little common sense on the cops part could have gone a long way too.

I think the dog was hanging out the window. The one picture shows the bullet hole and the window bent inwards. I'm not happy at all about police shooting dogs, it bothers me a lot but cops face a great number of unknowns. It's possible the cop was too aggressive but I always come back to the owner. The one who is responsible for the dog's safety. Leaving pets alone in a parked vehicle is just a super bad idea even just for a few minutes.
