Painting heritage grill

Anyone painted one?

They no longer come painted which isn't a big deal but I haven't painted plastic before. I'm assuming an adhesion promoter after some light scuffing?
Primer would still be needed?
Was planning on using my HVLP gun but it seems kinda ridiculous for such a small job.

Hmm, just remembered I've got one of those electric guns too. Somewhere. Probably stumble across it after the jobs done.

I cleaned mine real good with alcohol, Then i used Krylon fusion paint primer for first couple coats , then i used a color match spray paint that was mixed to match 2022 camaro orange, which is a close match to my wrap. then clear coated.

I also sprayed the black part of grill with krylon fusion matte black! I love the way that stuff sprays and looks!

Yep, both upper and lower I had painted. I am actually going to have mine repainted to have the color surround as white, and the grille slats as black!

I’ve had both of mine painted body color on the surround like MSgt described. I could do it myself but one of the shops in town only charges me $80 to do it. The way things are any more I’d use that in electricity to fire the compressor up let alone the paint/mixing/and prep materials…

That is a great price. Don't forget about the electricity to cure it in the oven! Just kidding!

a friend of mine painted the plastic grilles for my 66 pontiac many years ago.professional painter who restored classic cars.he used adhesion promoter, and im pretty sure followed it with a mist coat of primer, then let it dry and painted the color coat.it was still good 15 years later when i sold the car.

That turned out real nice! But also, I liked it before the repaint too.

Pretty much what we did with mine.

Lol it’s too damn big for the oven or I woulda tried it! If I do that again I might have a lot more free time but no money for my projects with child support lol. She might walk out the door and not come back lol JK!

While you’ve got the bumper off for the heritage I’d add a splitter it’s the perfect time to do it…. And look for shunt, I’m sure he’s still hiding in a few of these cars

I am the odd (some would say, very odd) man out. I like the heritage grill. But I am very partial to the OEM egg carton look. If I bought a 5th gen that had the heritage grill, I wouldn't change it but to change my OEM grills is a non-starter.

Agreed, best GM grill by a large margin. I am undecided on if I will paint mine when the time comes to paint the car. The anthracite matches my wheels. Maybe just paint gloss, but same color scheme.
