Anyone tried using linux to format a flash drive for music?

Getting ready to go pick up car, so I can't try this myself (yet).

Has anyone successfully formated a USB drive (flash or otherwise) on linux using mkfs? Manual says "FAT16, FAT32 or exFAT". I'm wondering if VFAT will work (my file names are really long... they have artist album title etc in the filename).

I use hdd and flash drives in both fat32 and ntsf they both work fine. Havn't tried using my Linux laptop to format. Should be fine though. Will try it this weekend.

You should be fine. Haven't use linux in a while but you should be able to do anything you need to using mkfs other than maybe format in ntfs (windows format) without dl'ing some extra tools.

you will need to use windows to format it, mac and linux don't always work the way they say they will when if comes to formatting to FAT,you might be able to install vitualbox and a windows vm, I haven't personally try this but in theory it might work.

Use FAT32, no reason to use VFAT since FAT32 can handle the long names and it probably won't read correctly.

Got the car, wanted to update this thread for future linux people...

mkdosfs -F 32 /dev/sdc1 (replace /dev/sdc1 with whatever device / partition yours shows up as)

Copied my mp3 tree to the drive, worked first time.
