Maybe I don't understand. I thought the launch control was supposed to control the throttle to limit wheel spin. Shouldn't it bring the engine speed down?

From what I understand and have read about the ZL1, not using launch control actually works better than launch control.... |

PTM Mode 5 is only for prepped tracks.

....LC is set up for generic use, programmed in a one size fits all manner, good for those who are limited in or have no experience with drag racing. I used it once to see how it worked. Nannies off, making adjustments, and launching based on the current conditions work the best.

First, I am a novice racer.
I am more into road course and auto cross racing but I have taken my 2012 M6 to the strip quite a few times. I have always used race mode 5 while at any type of racing event. When I get staged and the other car is staged I hold it flat on the floor and don't lift until I get through the traps on the other end. At the line it is usually around 4200 rpm and it does spin a little at the start and when shifting from 1st to 2nd. But not very much! Launch control analyzes the speed of the front tires and will only allow the rear tires to spin slightly faster than the front tires. So it constantly compares the front tires to the back tires and adjusts the throttle accordingly. The better you get the rear tires to hook up the more throttle it will allow the engine to put to them and the better you 60 ft will be. |

The quickest stock times posted have been run with LC turned off. LC allegedly is set for consistant times, not necessarily the fasted it seems. I don't like it.

PTM mode doesn't matter for launch control, I've done launch control in tour mode. The outside temp was your issue. If your going to do it at 60 degrees outside then your tires need to be warmed up first, even then they are still probably going to just spin.

I found that out yesterday. It was 68 degrees so I tried it again. This time when I nailed the gas the tach went to 5K and stayed right there. Again, not the 4k I thought it was supposed to be. This time it hooked up after a couple of feet. I also kept the throttle floored through the gears and never hit the rev limiter. While coasting down I noticed I forgot to put it in competitive driving mode and it was just in Tour mode. I thought the manual said you had to be in PTM (for coupes) or Comp (for verts).

Catch me if you can

Ok quick lesson for every one, follow me if you dare.
1. Read your manual on the race modes. 2. If you take your car to the track with stock tires you need to be in PTM 4. That's right FOUR (4). 3. If you go with Drag Radials you will to be in PTM 5. If your in an auto or a vert you do not have launch contol. This is a maual coupe only feature. Just last week I was able to run my ZL1 at the San Antonio raceway and get a 12.6 @ 114mph with a 2.04 sixty foot. Yes I can go faster by doing it myself, but I wanted to see how well I could do with PTM 4.

I'm pretty sure manual verts do have launch control, even though they don't have PTM modes.

personally i drive in ptm 5 most of the time. it tightens up the suspension the most and is the best mode for me when i launch. my tires just blow away with everything off and the car wants to fish tail all over so i use mode 5 or sometimes 4 if ive got a passenger

Maybe what I really want to know is whether or not my launch control is working correctly and if I am using it right. Weather has been crappy but supposed to clear up tomorrow. I plan to get a few more runs and see what that tells.

put car in competitive mode with the buttons by shifter, then apply full throttle somewhat quickly. it should lock your rpms at about 4000- 4400. launch at will. car will do controlled burnout (a short one) in first then without lifting off the gas shift through the rest of your gears. look in the no-lift shift thread to see a couple videos. the one i put in that thread is done from ptm# 5 from a dead stop. ive never been in the convertible so im not sure how many modes are actually there
