Arrow General Question About Tire Longevity...

I purchased my 2011 Camaro on 04/29/2011. It got delivered to the NJ dealership from PA so it had 263 Miles on it when I bought it (they told me about that and I was fine with it).

Currently, Five and a Half Years Later, I only have about 10,600 miles on it (I live close to where I work) and my Mechanic (VERY trustworthy, I've known him since High School) noticed some Dry-Rot on the tires and said I would need a new set by Spring of 2017.

I DO believe and Trust him, but should only 10,600 Miles of wear begin to show Dry-Rot on Tires? The tires are the O.E.M. ones that came with the car: P245/55-R18, BF Goodrich Radial T/A, they have a 620 Treadware Rating with a Traction/Temperature of A/B. It just seems like they should have lasted longer than that. I don't think it would be a Warranty issue, due to the age of the car anyway, but I wanted to post about it here and see if others have experienced any similar issues.

Your weather will kill tires. Feel lucky they lasted as long as they have.

Dry rot isn't associated with mileage. It's a function of tire age and exposure to environmental conditions--pollutants, sunlight, etc. I seem to recall something about 6 years from date of manufacture being the maximum that you should use a tire...could be mistaken, but that's what I recall. I've included a link that my provide some beneficial reading.

The compound the tires are made of only last so long on sports cars!

Like others have said, it doesn't necessarily depend on mileage on how they may dry rot. That being said, it you are having dry rot you may be able to get the dealership to knock some money off of a new set of tires based on mileage or lack their of on your original tires.

Just because it's not being driven doesn't mean tires won't eventually crack and dry rot

A lot depends on the tire, my brother's 2011 Chevy Silverado has low-mileage Michelin tires on them with like new tread BUT dry rot is starting to creep in heavy near the bead and shoulder of the tire. Tire rubber is only so thick and visible cracks are not a good thing, especially when you consider each crack is a weak spot that could cause the tire to blow. New tires every couple of years is cheap insurance.

Its because of the age of the tires, not to do with the mileage of the vehicle. For as long as you have had the tires yes sir this is normal.
