well.....I have the same engine in my STS, and I've had the oil/filter changed at the dealer a few times, and it was $85 here too.......I normally do it myself. and like all the others have mentioned, you can take the used to Walmart and they will accept it.

Invest in the tools to do it yourself and it will pay off in the long run. It's not hard. I did my first one a few weeks ago. Up till recently I haven't lived somewhere where I was able to do it. I was either in a neighborhood where I'd get fined if one drop of oil hit the ground or I was in an apartment where I had no room. Get a floor jack, jack stands (theres a good craftsman set at sears for $60-$70ish), and do it. Rather then dropping $90someodd bucks at Jiffy Lube, do it yourself you'll be dropping $30-40 a throw. Get a drip pan that seals, put it in a trash bag, put it in your car, and take it to somewhere where they recycle it.
It's not hard, trust me. On a difficulty scale of 1-10, an oil change is a 1.5.

Good thread... thanks OP.
I'm still at 80% left on my original oil change, but gathering info now. Always changed my own oil. When I had my 02 Corvette Convertible, I learned to use Mobile 1. Costco sells Mobile 1 in 6 qt cases for around $35 (goes up/down a couple bucks now and then) about every 3 months, they offer a $9 off or $10 off (have seen both) for a case. That's $25 for a case of 6 qts. Seem fair? SO, I have a mild stockpile of Mobile 1 from when I had the Vette. What filter is everyone going with? I'm assuming AC Delco? (keep it stock) In the Vette I used K&N cos it had the nut pressed into the casing so it was easy to remove. The stock placement on a C5 is horrid for a filter wrench, and I have about 7 of them. None would fit. I've noticed the Gen5 v6 uses a simple filter insert and it's by the dipstick on top of the engine... strange but cool. Does this void warranty to change my own oil? I can't bring myself to pay someone $85 to do something I already have the gear and a 1300 sq. foot garage to do it in. |
