Spare Tire
I did a search on this subject and didn't see anything posted. Just wanted to let those of you interested know if you want a compact spare tire you can use one off of a Pontiac G8. It is about an inch shorter, however I bolted it on the front of my car and it cleared the brakes and spun freely. I don't have a lot of confidence in those run flats so I wanted something if I take a long trip. Only thing that sucks is I have a convertible, and with the spare in the trunk that means no top down. Peace of mind is more important though.

Do you think it will fit in place of a rear wheel? How much might one expect to pay for such and animal, and what are you carrying for a jack and lug wrench?

There might be a problem running one tire smaller than the other on the rear

I have an RS convertible with a 2.0T. I know the G8's had performance brakes but not sure if this would clear an SS. As for a jack I plan on getting a bottle jack from Harbor Freight as it is compact and then a breaker bar, socket and cordless impact. I picked my spare up for $50 from a salvage yard we use at our shop.
As for running it on the rear, Due to our cars having limited slip I wouldn't, if a rear goes flat I would take a front and move it to the rear and run the spare on the front. It is a pain but better than damaging the rear diff. Last edited by tsemmons; 07-19-2017 at 05:51 PM. |
