The Blackbird is one of my all time favorite birds! Back in the day when I was in the service, I was stationed at NAS Lemoore with an F/A-18 squadron (VFA-97, did two WESTPAC's with that bunch). We had old birds like the A-6 Intruder, and the F-4 Phantom on display there in similar fashion. They looked badass. Wish I would have taken some up close pics with my Z28 like above. Along with the Hornets, I personally was able to experience up close squadrons of F-16's, F-15's... even the occasional F-117, and a B-2 while stationed there. I would give that all up to fly in one these bad boys in a heartbeat! Such a phenomenal piece of human ingenuity. |

I'm retired Air Force but when I was stationed at Ellsworth AFB SD I got to fly the B-1 Bomber in simulator. Out of 3 of us trying to fly it none of us could handle the air refueling. We all crashed and burned. But I was the only one that landed it safely without crashing it. Was so proud of myself then and it was so cool. The SR-71 was still flying when I was still in. Awesome plane and it leaked fuel like crazy but once it's flying the metal heats up and expands the metal and seals the fuel leaks. Way ahead of it time first flight was in 1964 amazing.

There's an SR-71 at the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. This pic is not that one. There are also a couple of Saturn Vs and a shuttle mock up, amongst many others.

I still personally think it could probably hit Mach 4, but we will never officially know. |

I've been to the Air Zoo in Kalamazoo (use to live there). It's a really neat place to visit for a few hours. The Blackbird is impressive in person, but there's also a ton of other stuff. My favorite was the 3D flight simulator theater type thing they have. Very cool.

Yeah I looked at that location, Blackbird Park. They are facing main streets and no way to get any decent pictures there. Too bad really because it's sweet.

Back in the 70s I supported SR-71 reconnaissance missions out of Cypress. It was an awesome aircraft, but I imagine satellite reconnaissance is much better, cheaper and safer.
