I agree. I try to fill it at 1/3 to 1/4 tank. Try not to let the red light come on.

Don’t go too long after the light and notice comes on as you will be calling someone to bring gas or walking to a gas station. Fair warning!

Please heed the warnings posted earlier in this thread, you don't want to let the low fuel light come on. Happened to me once, but I try my best not to forget to fill up at about a quarter tank left.

I don't think there are many issues with having the low fuel light on unless you are at a track or you just like to take turns really fast.

At a track, I would totally not fall under 1/4 tank just to avoid the potential lean spike.

For daily driving, you are probably fine. With these DI cars, it makes me wonder how hard these in-tank fuel pumps have to work, as it's the DI fuel pump at the engine that has to do most of the pressurizing work and that's driven by the camshaft. Just don't actually run out of fuel and I think you will be fine.

i drove 34 miles after the low fuel light came on. about 15 of which after it said "miles to empty: low". car was on ethanol at the time, as well. only managed to get 17.1 gallons in it.

stupid proof.

Mine light came on. I drove about 6km to get gas. I was able to put 62.1 litres in the tank meaning at that point I had ten litres left, or 2.64 gallons. Which means you should be able to go about 80 km or 50 miles averaging 12L/100km or 19,6 mpg. That would be exhausting all fuel, however I would think some of that gas wouldn’t be accessible. Still a decent amount you’re able to go if needed.

That's pretty generous, but I wouldn't want the low side fuel pump to be repeatedly exposed and lose all cooling, it's probably not overengineered to withstand this for long.

I had the light come on only once and only because I got stuck in a flash jam smack between two highway exits due to an accident. Of course I could've filled her up earlier, I tend to only let the gauge go down to a quarter or one eighth of a tank anyway.

A little pertinent info:
The car has a saddle tank. Right side has a pump with some valving and connections for evap/purge plus the liquid fuel line to the hp pump up front. There is a transfer line from the left side as well as a vent line. Both left and right side have fuel level sensors. The left side of the saddle gets drained first. The right side is full until your gauge in the cluster reads half a tank. At 1/4 tank, the right side is half full, the left is empty. Even at 1/8 fuel level the pump is sitting in a good bit of liquid.
Not saying you should run it to empty, just that the tank is emptied asymmetrically.

While I’m working remotely my SS has been used for very short trips to grab lunch or coffee meaning a full tank would last me around 2 weeks… The problem with that is I get a habit of just getting on the road and getting what I want and forgetting that I need gas. I’ve found that needing to fill up LESS has actually put me MORE in danger of running out of gas because I’m in such a routine of not needing to stop for fuel that I literally subconsciously ignore the gauge and forget to stop for fuel.

Thanks ctrlz, this is super useful info.

Indeed I was responding to a scenario when someone keeps driving the car 30-40-50 miles after the low fuel light comes on. I try to always fill up sooner than seeing this light.
