If Chevy really wants to swing for the fences, the path laid out in the article is NOT the way forward (IMHO).

I'd prefer this scenario...

1. The original car was a real breakthrough, for Chevy. Lightweight construction methods, for the time, to give it good performance despite the original engines lack of big power.

2. A true "halo" car needs to be focused on light-weight engineering, construction, and production methods.

3. We are on the verge of breakthroughs on carbon-fiber/3D printing methods, which could give us light and strong parts at a very reasonable price point.

4. A mid-engine Corvette needs to weigh no more than 3,000 pounds -- and preferably less. If the design team could hit a 2,800 pound target, the performance would be phenomenal.

SO -- I'd love to see something that approaches Lotus weight levels, with new-age ZR1 levels of on-track performance. Using innovative materials and construction methods, so that it offers a new standard for torsional rigidity per pound -- and offers hypercar performance for no more than $125K...

Sports cars have continued to gain weight. The 3,500 lb. Corvette Z06 is one of the lightest in its category, even when compared to cars costing much much more.

A mid-engine Corvette is interesting, however is it really a Corvette? A new model as shown called the ZR1-Zora would be cool! It would also makes sense why the C7 Z06 has seemed to replace the ZR1.

The inevitable result of a Corvette "family" would be a Corvette SUV

Jessie Lang drives a 69 Trans Am Z/28. That car sounds sweet as hell.

My only concern with a mid engine Corvette is taking it out of the true GT category.

I've taken and enjoyed many a long road trip and vacation in C5s and C6s. Both coupe and convertible could take Mrs. Number 3 and I, our luggage for a week and 2, yes TWO, sets of golf clubs.

A mid engine car, although awesome in concept, likely would no longer be the car to take on vacation.

So maybe a separate much higher end car? Don't know what the best answer is, but it would make the Corvette much less desirable for me regardless of performance.

I don't think the Corvette should be mid engine but I think GM should look into building a true, mid engine supercar. Maybe call that the Zora.

If, indeed, there IS a "case" for a family of Vettes, the mid-shipman would be the pinnacle, but pricy. However, when you hear what some folks in the last 10 years have paid for early-production C6 Z06s and ZL1s (and may pay for early C7 Z06s) in certain markets, a low-volume $150-up hyper-Vette isn't that far-fetched or "fanciful thinking"...

After all, who would have thought, a few years back, a $75K Z/28 was "marketable"?!
